El DJ y productor australiano nos visita para desvelarnos todos sus secretos. ¡Quedáos en la cueva y conoced a una de las joyas del panorama electrónico internacional!

Loud Cave: Para empezar esta entrevista nos gustaría remontarnos a tus comienzos. ¿De donde viene tu pasión por la música electrónica? ¿Cuando empezó tu carrera musical?

Marcus Santoro: Me he criado alrededor de la música. Era una gran parte de la vida cotidiana de mi familia, aunque ninguno de nosotros tocaba instrumentos, más bien mi padre era DJ en los 70/80s. Por lo que, técnicamente, la música dance fue un factor muy importante en mi vida cuando era niño. Sin embargo, desarrollé una pasión por la música electrónica alrededor de 2003 a través de mis primos mayores que en ese momento escuchaban trance, que es donde encontré mi inspiración. Poco después, me volví adicto a la música.

Loud Cave: To start this interview we want to know something about your beginnings. Where does it comes from your passion for electronic music? When did your music career start?

Marcus Santoro: I’ve grown up with music my entire life. It was a large part of my family’s everyday life, although none of us played instruments, rather my Dad was a DJ back in the 70’s/80’s. So technically, dance music was very much a factor in my life as a kid. I developed a passion for electronic music however in around 2003 through older cousins of mine whom at the time were listening to more Trance based records, which is where I found my proper introduction. Shortly after, I became addicted to the music. It wasn’t until a few years later when I started high school in 2008…where I discovered music production software that allowed me to really get stuck into it and now the rest is history! 

LC: La vida de un productor presenta muchos cambios, en muchos casos (como el tuyo), el estilo musical está en una constante evolución. ¿Cómo ha ido cambiando tu estilo a lo largo de estos años? ¿Cuales han sido tus influencias e inspiraciones? ¿Cual es el camino que va a seguir el sonido de Marcus Santoro en un futuro próximo?

MS: Definitivamente mi estilo ha cambiado considerablemente con el transcurso de los años, más específicamente los últimos 24 meses. Siempre me ha encantado la música melódica, por lo que he mantenido ese elemento en casi todas las producciones que he escrito, pero a lo largo del camino he cambiado algunos sonidos para mantenerlo fresco e interesante, creo que eso es importante si no quieres seguir las “tendencias”. Mis fans habrían visto el cambio de estilo partiendo un sonido basado en el big room, a uno más en la dirección del progressive trance y ahora yendo hacia un sonido más ‘analógico’ y profundo. Mis influencias siempre han sido artistas como Dirty South, Axwell, Alesso, Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond… Creo que más adelante, simplemente voy a hacer lo que me guste y sienta que funciona.

LC: The journey of a producer has a lot of changes and, in most cases (like yours), the music style is a constant evolution. How have your own style been evolving through all these years? What are your influences and mentors? Which is the way that the Marcus Santoro’s sound is going to follow in the near future?

MS: My style has definitely changed considerably over the years, more specifically within the past 24 months. I’ve always loved melodic music, so I’ve kept that element in almost every single production I’ve written but along the way have changed some sounds to keep it fresh and interesting, I feel that is important if you don’t want to follow a “trend”. Fans of mine would have seen my shift in style going from a more big room based sound, to a more progressive trance direction to now going a little more deeper and ‘analog’ sound. My influences have always been artists like Dirty South, Axwell, Alesso, Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond…I think moving forward, I’m just going to do what I love and whatever I feel works. 

LC: Tus producciones están enfocadas mayoritariamente al progressive house y el trance, dos géneros con bastante en común, y a la vez diferentes. Cuando estás trabajando en una canción, ¿qué te hace decidir por un género o el otro? ¿Utilizas elementos de ambos géneros independientemente del género que estés trabajando en ese momento?

MS: No pienso en que dirección voy a tomar cuando intento descifrar los dos sonidos. Simplemente sucede durante el proceso. Por ejemplo, mi pasado sencillo “Blackout” con Lauren L’aimant fue naturalmente en una dirección inspirada en el trance y así quedó el resultado. Siempre me gusta combinar ambos géneros de alguna manera para hacerlos funcionar.

LC: Your productions are mostly within progressive house and trance, two genres with a lot of things in common but, at the same time, different. When you are working on a song, what makes you decide to go for progressive house or trance? Do you use elements from both genres independently the genre you’re working at this precise moment?

MS: I don’t think about what direction I’m going to go for when trying to decipher the two sounds. It just happens in the process. For example, with my recent single ‘Blackout’ with Lauren L’aimant, it just naturally went into that trance-inspired direction and I rolled with it. I always like to utilise both genres together in some way to make it work.

LC: ¿En qué momento de tu carrera estabas cuando lanzaste “The Is Only You”? ¿Cómo afectó el apoyo de Above & Beyond y Armin Van Buuren (entre muchos otros) para tu carrera? ¿Qué nuevas puertas y oportunidades se te abrieron?

MS: Estuve increíblemente agradecido con su apoyo en aquel tiempo ya que era muy importante para mi y mi carrera. Fue el punto en el que o lo dejaba, o seguía metido en la industria de la música… Solo esperaba lo mejor mandando mi música a A&B y por ellos por escoger el tema y mucho más ya que fue increíble y definitivamente la motivación adecuada para seguir trabajando. Abrió un nuevo mundo de apoyos de los DJS, shows y como productor… me ayudo a ser mas abierto y expresivo con la música que escribo.

LC: In what moment of your career were you when you released “There Is Only You”? What was the effect of the Above & Beyond’s and Armin Van Buuren (between many others) support for your career? What new doors did you open and opportunities did you earn?

MS: I was incredibly grateful for their support at that time as it was a very important time for me and my career. It was the turning point whether or not I would continue to be involved in the music industry…I just hoped for the best sending my music to A&B and for them to pick up the record and a lot more since was amazing and definitely the proper motivation to keep working. It opened up a whole new world of DJ support, shows, and as a producer…allowed me to be more open and expressive on the music I write. 

LC: ¿Has pensado alguna vez en trabajar en un sonido totalmente distinto, algo más alejado de las emociones como el progressive house o el trance? ¿Qué género te gustaría explorar y por qué?

MS: He trabajado en múltiples estilos y géneros diferentes en otro proyecto del pasado que no recae bajo el sonido de “Marcus Santoro”. Si en el futuro tuviera que escribir un álbum, me gustaría producir con la que haya crecido o usarla como inspiración. Soy un gran fan del indie/folk, pop, disco, música de ambiente, synth-pop por lo que… ¡estos son los caminos a explorar en el futuro!

LC: Have you ever thought about working on a totally different kind of sound, something a bit further of emotions like progressive house and trance? Which would be a genre that you’d like to explore and work? Why?

MS: I have worked on multiple different styles/genres for other production work in the past that doesn’t fall under the ‘Marcus Santoro’ sound. Ideally, in the future if I were to write an album, I’d want to produce music that I have grown up with or use as inspiration. I’m a big fan of indie/folk, pop, disco, ambient music, synth-pop so these are all avenues to explore in the future for sure!

LC: La música esta siendo influenciada por el sonido urbano cada vez más. ¿Cómo piensas que va a afectar a la música electrónica en general? ¿Se verá afectado de alguna forma tu propio sonido?

MS: Personalmente, creo que es un buen equilibrio… Le da a la música dance más espacio para respirar y estar abierta a nuevos lugares y audiencias. No creo que me vaya a ver influenciado para tomar esa dirección, pero conozco a algunas personas que lo han hecho y les ha funcionado realmente bien.

LC: Music is being influenced by the urban sound more and more. How do you think this is gonna affect to the evolution of electronic music in general? Will you sound be influenced somehow?

MS: Personally, I think it’s a good balance…it gives dance music more room to breathe and be open to new avenues and new audiences. I don’t think I’d ever be influenced to take that direction, but I know a few people who have and it’s worked out really well for them. 

LC: ¿Qué puedes contarnos sobre la escena electrónica en Australia? ¿Cómo ha sido su crecimiento en esta pasada década? ¿Cuáles son los géneros que más predominan?

MS: La escena electrónica australiana es bastante interesante, mucho más porque esta muy lejos del resto del mundo. He crecido en Australia toda mi vida, así que he visto el lado dramático de la escena de la música pero un poco antes de que empezara mi momento, podía disfrutar de la vida nocturna y cuando lo hice, no era la música que esperaba, pero es lo que hay. Te adaptas. Pienso en Australia ahora hay mucha actividad underground, hay mucha demanda de techno, tech house, minimal… pero luego hay otros que quieren pop/dance.

LC: What can you tell us about the electronic music scene in Australia? How has the growing of it been during this past decade? What are the most predominant genres? 

MS: The Australian dance music scene is an interesting one, more so because it’s so far away from the rest of the world. I’ve grown up in Australia my entire life, so I have seen the dramatic shift in the music scene but it was a little before my time before I could start enjoying the nightlife and when I did, it wasn’t the music I was hoping for, but it is what it is. You adapt to it. I think in Australia now, there’s a lot of underground activity happening now, there’s big demand for techno, tech house, minimal…but then there’s open format venues who want pop/dance.

LC: ¿Tienes algún hábito o manía curiosa en tu vida diaria o mientras produces música?

MS: No exactamente jaja, me puedo distraer fácilmente trabajando desde mi estudio en casa… pero hago todo lo posible para mantenerme concentrado en lo que respecta a la producción.

LC: Do you have any weird or curious habit in your daily life or while producing music?

MS: Not exactly haha, I can get distracted quite easily though working from my home studio…but I try my best to stay focused when it comes to production.

LC: ¿Cuáles han sido los mejores y peores momento de tu carrera? ¿Alguna anécdota que te gustaría contarnos?

MS: Ha habido muchos momentos increíbles y también muchos momentos horribles… Creo que eso es lo que crea tu carrera, o lo que la moldea en una importante. Algunos de los mejores momentos para mí han sido cuando escribía música con ilusión, o viajando y haciendo tours y actuando en shows increíbles. Otras veces sin embargo, puede ser bastante deprimente cuando las cosas no van de la forma que querías o esperabas… y hay muchas más cosas como esas que pueden hacer que te vengas abajo. Creo que nunca se puede escapar de los malos momentos, porque es algo natural que forma parte de la vida, así que disfruta todo lo que puedas mientras puedas!

LC: What has been the best and worst moment of your career and why? Any curious or funny anecdote that you’d like to tell us? 

MS: There’s been so many amazing moments and so many terrible moments…I think that’s what creates the career, or moulds it into a substantial one. Some of the best moments for me have been when I’ve written music I’ve been excited about, or travelling around and touring playing some real amazing shows. Other times however, it can get quite depressing when things don’t go the way you hoped…and there’s many more of those to happen down the line I am sure. I think you never escape bad moments, because it’s just a natural part of life in general, so just enjoy everything you do whilst you can!

LC: 2020 ha empezado fuerte para ti con el lanzamiento de “Blackout” a través de Protocol Recordings. ¿Qué puedes contarnos sobre tu futuro cercano? ¿Qué proyectos, colaboraciones o lanzamientos tienes en mente? ¿Quizá una colaboración con Nicky Romero pronto?

MS: Hay mucha música en camino. Estoy casi listo para lanzar mi nuevo sencillo con Ivan Gough que saldrá muy pronto… y estoy muy emocionado. ¡Hay más shows por anunciar, incluyendo mi presencia en Ultra Australia en Melbourne y Sydney en marzo! Jaja creo que Nicky si quiere colaborar, sería un gran paso… ¡Quién sabe!

LC: 2020 had a strong beginning for you with the release of “Blackout” in Protocol Recordings. What can you tell us about your nearest future? What projects, collaborations or releases do you have in mind? Maybe a collab with Protocol’s boss Nicky Romero soon?

MS: There’s a lot more music on the way. I’m almost ready to release my new single with Ivan Gough which is coming out very soon…which I’m very excited about. There’s more shows to be announced, including my upcoming run at Ultra Australia in Melbourne & Sydney this March! Haha I think if Nicky wants to collab, that would be a great move…who knows!
