Entrevistando a: Netsky

LC: The Netsky we most knew will have changed a lot since 2012, how would you define yourself as an artist nowadays?
N: Hello! You’re right, it all started with dnb for me. And over the years I liked playing with other genres and types of music. Going back to those dnb roots with my latest album now.

LC: How did you start your career as an artist? What was the event that most influenced your career at this stage of your life?
N: I was making music while I was a student. I was concentrating way more on production and dj’ing than on studying. I remember seeing Daft Punk once on a holiday in France, that was a big moment for me. But it was my dad’s love for soul & jazz that got me addicted to music in the first place.

LC: Did you experience the criticism from a large part of your audience when you started realising different things, like “Tequila Limonada” or “Ice Cold”?
N: Definitely! Dnb has a really passionate fanbase. Which is what I have to thank most of my career to. That being said, I try to make music that I’m feeling at the moment when I write though, not thinking on how people might react. I think that’s important, thinking outside your comfort zone.

LC: At what point did you realize that you really wanted to experiment a little and momentarily put aside the genre that had accompanied you since your beginning? Did you ever think of releasing this music from a new alias?
N: Yes, I had moments where I considered an alias. But Netsky has been my name since day one and I want to be able to evolve within this project. If I ever start a post- rock or techno project, I might need to consider another name, but I feel all the music I’ve put out under Netsky still fits under my umbrella.

LC: Do you think that today you are a better producer thanks to everything you learned with that new stage?
N: Yes, but one thing I learned is to sometimes limit options and look back at the way I made music in the beginning. Producing music is always going to be a learning curve, which is what makes it fun!

LC: How was your return to Hospital Records, the label that has accompanied you most of your career? What do you most admire about the label?
N: I have so many great memories with Hospital on the label side but also at their events. I think touring with a full Hospital Records line up in America about 7 years ago will always be one of my most memorable tours.

LC: Getting into the subject with “Second Nature”, it has seemed incredible to us how you have managed to condense all your musical cuts into a single album. How has the process of creating it been?
N: It’s been really fun! 30% of the album were sketches I had laying around for years. All the rest was made this year. I really enjoyed reworking some of my favourite soul records. Especially Roy Ayers’ classic ‘Everybody loves the sunshine’

LC: Considering that you have brought together artists like Rudimental, Darren Styles or Urbandawn, were you clear from the beginning that you wanted a very varied album?
N: Varied within dnb! I love the extra flavours all artists above have brought to these songs. Been a while since I collaborated with dnb producers! I love how smooth it went.

LC: We know this question is difficult, but… What is the most special track for you on “Second Nature”?
N: You know, I’ve always found it hard to answer this question but on this album I have a definite favourite, ‘Hold On’ with the amazing Becky Hill. Very personal song to us!

LC: How has the whole COVID-19 situation affected you at the launch of your album? Did you think about delaying it or making any changes to the way it is published?
N: I was in the finishing stages of the album when Europe hit lockdown. I guess the most visible effect on me has been my wild indoor jungle getting a bit out of hand. You can see the evolution of that in my live streams.

LC: How does Netsky face his future? What advice would you give to the Netsky of 2012, who saw the absolute takeoff of his career with the release of “2” and “2 Deluxe”?
N: I’d love to work with some more local talent this and next year. I would also like to focus more on new young artists. Maybe I’ll look into starting a label at some point. It’s all about collaborating, and if I could give 21-year-old me advice it would be about that.

LC: We know that Tomorrowland is a very special festival for you, partly because it’s celebrated next to where you grew up, and because you host a stage. In 2019 you did a special set in The Rave Cave where you mixed only old liquid drum & bass, how was that experience? Do you plan to do some more special sessions in the next editions of the festival?
N: Man, that day was so much fun!! The rave cave has never been so packed haha. I want to do that set every year there if I can.

LC: What were your artistic inspirations at the beginning of your career and what are they nowadays?
N: I think in the beginning I was more inspired by electronic music. Now I listen to music that inspires me indirectly a lot more. I love r&b and hip hop, but also listen to a lot of soul and jazz at home.

¿Has considerado hacerlo?

LC: You have more than enough importance in the electronic scene to open your own label. Have you ever considered it? If yes, which artists would you like to have inside
N: Would be so cool! I’ll have to choose later when I know what direction the label would be in though.
