El dúo Document One y Levela nos hablan su EP conjunto «Heat Beams» y la escena drum n' bass, directos desde Reino Unido.
Loud Cave: Primero de todo, ¿cómo os está yendo en estos tiempos difíciles chicos?
Document One: ¡Muy bien, gracias! Estamos pasando por un período de terminar nueva música, así que estamos muy contentos y esperamos que los shows regresen para el verano para poder compartirlos con todos vosotros a través de unos potentes altavoces.
Levela: Ha sido un año interesante y difícil a veces, pero personalmente he usado el tiempo para aprender más habilidades y encontrar formas alternativas de obtener ingresos del drum & bass sin los sets de DJ, ¡lo cual es algo positivo que puedo sacar de todo esto!
Loud Cave: First of all, how are you doing through these rough times guys?
Document One: Pretty good thanks! We're just going through a period of finishing new music so we're really happy and hoping that shows will come back for the summer so we can share them with you all over some loud speakers.
Levela: It’s been an interesting year and tough at times, but I’ve personally used the time to learn more skills and find alternative ways to make an income from drum&bass without the DJ sets which is a positive I can take from all of this!
LC: ¿Cómo surgió esta colaboración en forma de EP? ¿De dónde viene la idea?
D.O: Bueno, habíamos hecho varios shows con Levela y llegamos a la idea porque todos nos llevábamos bien y teníamos el mismo respeto por la música de los demás. Supongo que las cosas no se pusieron serias hasta que actuamos en Multi Function en Brighton a principios de 2020 (Levela es residente una noche al mes) donde tomamos la decisión consciente de enviar algunas ideas de un lado a otro.
L: Sí, fue después de mi evento en Brighton que los chicos de Document One me enviaron una idea en la que trabajar y esa primera idea resultó ser “Heat Beams”. Se unió tan rápido y naturalmente que pensamos: «¿por qué no hacer más?» Y luego «Heat Beams» se convirtió en un EP completo en el transcurso de alrededor de 6 meses.
LC: How did this collaboration EP become a real thing? Where does the idea come from?
D.O: Well we had played several shows with Levela and touched on the idea just because we all got on well and had equal respect for each other's music. I guess things didn't become serious until we played a multifunction night in Brighton early 2020 (Levelas own monthly night) where we made a conscious decision to send a few ideas back and forth.
L: yeah it was after my event in Brighton that the Doc One guys sent me an idea to work on and that first idea turned out to be “Heat Beams”. It came together so quickly and naturally we thought “why not make more?” and then Heat Beams turned into a full EP over the course of around 6 months.
LC: ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de trabajo? ¿La pandemia os lo ha puesto más difícil?
D.O: Este es uno de esos proyectos en los que puedes mirar hacia atrás y decir que fue muy fácil intercambiar ideas y que las 4 canciones se juntaron con relativa facilidad. Joe y yo hemos trabajado de forma remota durante algún tiempo ya que nos resulta más fácil terminar varias canciones, por lo que trabajar con Levela fue solo una extensión de ese proceso, pero solo que con ideas mucho más divertidas lanzadas a la mesa. En todo caso, diría que tener más tiempo debido a la pandemia hizo que fuera más fácil concentrarse en llevar a cabo el proyecto, todos nos motivamos mucho y estábamos ansiosos por compartirlo con todos.
L: Siempre he hecho colaboraciones de forma remota compartiendo ideas y stems online, nunca antes había tenido otro productor físicamente en mi estudio, jaja. Así que fue un proceso fácil y Document One me proporcionó sonidos increíbles con los que trabajar y también dieron vida a mis ideas, así que creo que funcionó muy bien para los dos.
LC: How has the work process been? Has the pandemic made it more difficult for you?
D.O: This is one of those projects you can look back on and say it was really easy to bounce ideas off each other and the 4 songs came together relatively easy. Myself and Joe have worked remotely for some time now as we find it easier to finish multiple songs, so working with levela was just an extension of that process, but only with way more fun ideas thrown in the pot. If anything I'd say having more time due to the pandemic made it easier to focus on getting the project done, we all became very driven and couldn't wait to share it with everyone.
L: I’ve always done collabs remotely by sharing ideas and stems online, I’ve never even had another producer physically in my studio before haha. So it was an easy process and Document One gave me awesome sounds to work with and they also brought my ideas to life so it worked really well for us both I feel.
LC: En el EP podemos escuchar una muy buena simbiosis entre vuestros estilos, ¿por qué pensasteis en un primer momento que vuestros sonidos pegarían bien juntos?
D.O: No fue eso en absoluto. Para nosotros era solo un caso de que nos encantaba la música de Levela y disfrutamos de su compañía, así que sabíamos que sería un proyecto fácil de llevar a cabo. Naturalmente, el sonido de nuestros estilos se manifiesta, pero ambos somos artistas bastante movidos por la pista de baile, por lo que no fue difícil fusionar nuestras vibraciones.
L: Sí, estoy de acuerdo que no se sintió particularmente duro o difícil hacer este EP, sucedió de manera muy natural. Nuestros propios estilos individuales encajaron bien juntos.
LC: In the EP we can hear a very good symbiosis between your styles, why did you think at first that your sounds would go well together?
D.O: It wasn't that at all. For us it was just a case that we loved levela’s music and enjoyed his company so knew it would be an easy going project to pursue. Naturally the sound of both our styles comes through, but we’re both pretty dance floor driven acts so it wasn't a hard thing to fuse the vibes.
L: Yes I agree, that it didn’t feel particularly hard or difficult to make this EP, it happened very naturally. Our own individual styles just fitted together well.
LC: ¿Planeáis seguir colaborando en el futuro cercano u os concentraréis ahora en vuestras carreras individuales?
D.O: Creo que a todos nos encantaría retomar este proceso colaborativo de nuevo en el futuro, pero en la actualidad todos estamos muy ocupados en partes en solitario. Por ahora, sé que tenemos muchos lanzamientos futuros ya organizados, ¡pero definitivamente diría que estén atentos a este espacio para fin de año!
L: Hemos hablado de hacer otro proyecto en colaboración para dar seguimiento al «Heat Beams EP» tal vez más adelante en el año. Pero ahora mismo tengo tantos proyectos en solitario a medio terminar que necesito acabar antes de poder comenzar algo nuevo otra vez. Vienen muchas cosas este año.
LC: Do you plan to continue collaborating in the near future or will you now focus on your individual careers?
D.O: I think we would all love to pick up this collaborative process again in the future, but at present we are all so busy on solo bits. For now i know we have plenty of future releases booked in but id definitely say watch this space by the end of the year!
L: We have discussed doing another colab project to follow up the “Heat Beams EP” maybe later in the year. But right now I have so many half finished solo projects I need to finish before I can start anything new again. Lots coming this year.
LC: Si no nos equivocamos ambos sois de Gran Bretaña. Recientemente hemos visto que por mayo vuestro país podría tener conciertos en espacios cubiertos de nuevo, y en junio sin distanciamiento social. ¿Cómo veis la situación? ¿Creéis que es posible sin poner en riesgo la salud de la gente?
D.O: Sí, todos somos del Reino Unido y definitivamente pensamos que, por primera vez en 12 meses, el futuro es un poco más esperanzador y brillante. Decir que los conciertos sin distanciamiento social estarán abiertos a fines de junio sería simplemente increíble, pero obviamente hay muchos pasos en el camino para asegurar que eso suceda. Si bien escribir y hacer alguna transmisión online ha sido genial y un cambio de ritmo como mínimo, creo que todos en nuestra escena y cualquier aspecto del entretenimiento están ansiosos por volver y están ansiosos por dar a la gente lo que todos quieren.
L: La situación de COVID en el Reino Unido está cambiando todo el tiempo, por lo que es difícil planificar con demasiada anticipación y emocionarse demasiado con las raves y los festivales que regresan este verano. Estoy tratando de ser optimista y esperanzado, pero supongo que solo el tiempo lo dirá.
LC: If we’re not wrong both of you are from the UK. Recently we saw that by May your country could be having indoor concerts again, and in June without social distancing, how do you see the situation? Do you think it’s possible without putting people's health at risk?
D.O: Yes we're all from the UK and definitely think for the first time in 12months the future is a bit more hopeful and brighter. To say that gigs without social distancing will be open at the end of June would just be incredible, but obviously there are many steps on the road ahead to ensure that happens. Whilst writing and doing the odd stream has been great and change of pace to say the least, i think everyone in our scene and any aspect of entertaining is just raring to go again and cannot wait to give the people what they all want.
L: The COVID situation in the UK is changing all the time so it’s hard to plan too far ahead and to get too excited about raves and festivals coming back this summer, I am trying to be optimistic and hopeful, but I guess only time will tell.

LC: ¿Un artista joven que estéis disfrutando ahora mismo?
D:O: ¡Subsonic es simplemente asombroso! ¡Es joven y su producción y escritura está al siguiente nivel! Definitivamente uno a tener en cuenta.
L: Uno de mis nuevos productores favoritos es Waeys (tengo una colaboración con él que sale muy pronto).
LC: A young artist that you’re enjoying right now?
D.O: Subsonic is just amazing! He's young and his production and writing is next level! Defo one to watch out for.
L: One of my favourite new producers is Waeys (I have a colab coming out with him very soon).
LC: ¿Un deseo para el resto del año?
D.O: Para ser honestos nuestro deseo para este año es que intentemos encontrar algo de normalidad y que todos volvamos a hacer lo que nos gusta.
L: ¡Mi deseo para el resto del año es volver a Andalucía para actuar en otro show con la increíble gente de España!
LC: A wish for the rest of the year?
D.O: Tbh our wish for this year is that we can try to find some normality and that everyone just gets back to doing what they love.
L: My wish for the rest of the year is that I will be back in Andulasia playing another show with the incredible people of Spain!
