El californiano Rome in Silver se pasa a charlar por la cueva después de lanzar “Makeshift Moon EP” en bitbird.
El cambiante e innovador productor y DJ ha lanzado su tercer EP en el que vuelve a traernos sonidos frescos nunca antes escuchados por su parte. Después de este lanzamiento, del que tenía muchas ganas, nos habla de sus próximos pasos, su filosofía de trabajo y su visión de la música.
Loud Cave: Para aquellos que no te conozcan, ¿quién es Rome in Silver?
Rome in Silver: Solo soy un niño de California que creció en el desierto y no tenía nada mejor que hacer, así que encontró la música para mantenerse ocupado. Intento combinar ritmos divertidos y funky con ritmos extraños y cambiantes para mantener a la gente pensando. Eso, sumado a un gran factor visual para casi todo. Todo se trata de estética.
Loud Cave: For those who don’t know you yet, who is Rome in Silver?
Rome in Silver: Just a California kid who grew up in the desert and had nothing better to do so he found music to keep himself occupied. I try to combine fun and funky beats with weird and shifting rhythms to keep people guessing. That plus a heavy visual element to pretty much everything. I’m all about the aesthetic.
LC: ¿De dónde viene tu deseo de dedicar tu vida a la música? Hemos visto tu entusiasmo en las redes sociales por lanzar este EP, ¿por qué estabas tan ansioso por lanzar específicamente este “Makeshift Moon”?
RiS: Siempre me ha apasionado crear cosas. De pequeño me encantaba filmar y editar videos usando cualquier equipo que tuviera a mi disposición. Siempre tuve el impulso de hacer cosas que sorprendieran a mis amigos. Es lo mismo con mi música, y creo que este EP en particular es uno que les muestro a mis amigos y su mente viaja a muchos lugares diferentes.
LC: Where does your desire to dedicate your life to music come from? We have seen your enthusiasm on social media for releasing this EP, why were you so eager to specifically release this “Makeshift Moon”?
RiS: I’ve always had a passion for creating things. Growing up I loved to film and edit videos using whatever equipment I had at my disposal. I always had a drive to make things that surprised my friends. It’s the same with my music, and I think this EP in particular is one that I show my friends and their mind goes to so many different places.
LC: En “Makeshift Moon” escuchamos dos temas más cercanos al bass y tres con ritmos breaks y house, ¿hay alguna razón detrás de esto? ¿O sólo el probar nuevas cosas?
RiS: Intento dejar a la gente pensando e intento cosas que nunca antes había hecho mientras mantengo algo de la temática. Creo que la mayoría de estas canciones son bastante cambiantes con la excepción de una. También me encanta el hecho de que todos los me han hablado sobre el EP parecen tener una canción favorita diferente. Ser diverso significa que todos pueden disfrutar de algo.
LC: In “Makeshift Moon” we hear two tracks closer to bass and three with breaks and house rhythms, is there any reason behind this? Or just keep trying new things?
RiS: I try to keep people guessing and try things that I’ve never done before while still maintaining some sort of theme. I think most of these tracks are quite moody with the exception of one. I also love the fact that everyone who’s reached out about it seems to have a different favorite song off of it. Being diverse means everyone can enjoy something.
LC: A lo largo de todos los EP que has lanzado, hemos escuchado muchos estilos diferentes, ¿qué hace que nunca quieras centrarte en un solo género?
RiS: No me gusta quedarme estancado. Hay algunos estilos que prefiero producir por encima de otros, pero nunca me quedaría en un género. Ser libre y poder hacer lo que quiera ha significado mucho más tiempo para que la gente lo capte, pero en general creo que mis fans aprecian lo que hago. Nunca sabrán qué esperar.
LC: Throughout all the EPs you have released we have listened to many different styles, what makes you never want to focus on just one genre?
RiS: I don’t like to stay stagnant. There are some styles that I prefer to make over others but I would never settle on one genre. Being free and able to make whatever I want has meant a much longer time for people to catch on, but overall I think my fans appreciate what I do. They’ll never know what to expect.
LC: Ya sea en bitbird o en Monstercat, tus portadas siempre tienen un parecido entre sí, abstractas para los EP y usando imágenes de ti mismo para los singles. ¿Por qué decidiste hacerlo así?
RiS: Me centro mucho en la estética visual. Siempre me han interesado piezas visuales únicas como pinturas, tatuajes, películas, etc. Para mí, un EP o la carátula de un álbum representa mucho más de lo que a la gente le da crédito. Cada vez que pienso en una canción, lo primero que pienso es en su portada o en su video musical. Todo cuenta una historia y representa al artista. Es por eso que no puedo esperar para hacer más videos musicales e incorporar aún más el aspecto visual a mi proyecto.
LC: Either in bitbird or in Monstercat, your artworks always have a resemblance to each other, abstract for the EPs and using images of yourself for the singles. Why did you decide to make it so?
RiS: I focus a ton on visual aesthetics. I’ve always been interested in unique visual pieces like paintings, tattoos, films, etc. To me an EP or album artwork represents so much more than what people give it credit for. Every time I think of a song, the first thing I think of is either its artwork, or its music video. It all tells a story and it represents the artist. That’s why I can’t wait to do more music videos and really incorporate the visual aspect to my project even more.
LC: Sabemos que aunque te gusta incluir muchos estilos diferentes en tu trabajo, las cosas pueden ser muy diferentes en las sesiones de DJ, ¿cómo las preparas? ¿Hay alguna rama de la música electrónica que prefieras más a la hora de pinchar?
RiS: Realmente depende de dónde esté actuando, pero poder pinchar un poco de todo es una bendición sin duda. En el futuro, me encantaría hacer un set que sea 100% mi propia música. Eso es lo que pretendo. Podría hacerlo ahora, pero lo guardo para más tarde.
LC: We know that although you like to include many different styles in your work, things can be very different in DJ sessions, how do you prepare them? Is there any branch of electronic music that you prefer more when it comes to DJing?
RiS: It really depends on where I’m playing but being able to play a little bit of everything is a blessing for sure. In the future I’d love to do a set that is 100% my own music. That’s what I’m aiming for. I could do it now, but I’m saving it for later.
LC: Según tu biografía de Spotify, todavía tienes otro EP para lanzar este año, pero ¿cuándo considerarás debutar en formato de álbum?
RiS: Se suponía que iba a hacer otro EP, pero en este punto estoy listo para hacer mi álbum debut, así que eso es lo siguiente para mí. Puede que haga algunos sencillos, pero en el fondo me estoy preparando para hacer un álbum de larga duración y ¡será épico! Espero que sea en 2022.
LC: According to your Spotify biography, you still have another EP to release this year, but when will you consider making your debut in album format?
RiS: I was supposed to do another EP but at this point I’m ready to do my debut album so that is what is next for me. I may do some singles but ultimately I am gearing up to do a full length album and it’s going to be epic! I expect that to be in 2022.
