Coincidiendo con el lanzamiento de su último EP “Varmland” tuvimos la ocasión de charlar con la banda sueca Highly Sedated.

Desde que sacaron su primer single por SIZE Records, “Existence”, en 2016, esta banda sueca llamó nuestra atención. Meses más tarde llegaría su primer álbum “All We Have is Now” con el que nos confirmaron que habían llegado para quedarse. Con una mezcla de sonidos que van desde el house hasta el techno, este grupo no se enmarca en ningún tipo de sonido y cada vez nos sorprenden más con su creatividad en el estudio. Ahora sin más dilación pasamos a la entrevista que hemos tenido el gran honor de realizarles.

Loud Cave: Empezaremos hablando sobre vosotros, ¿cómo os conocisteis todos los integrantes del grupo? ¿Por qué empezasteis a hacer música juntos?
Highly Sedated: Bueno, Patrick (vocalista) se puso en contacto con Leo (productor) cuando compartían editor antes, y empezaron a enviarse material entre ellos. Luego Patrick fue invitado a un festival con Verner (vocalista) e invitaron a Sebastian (que más tarde dejó la banda) y a Hannes para acompañarles. Tuvimos una semana de locos juntos, que fue algo más que una semana no apta para menores, pero lo más imporatante fue que sentimos el VIBE, ese que buscas pero que no puedes forzar. Estuvimos juntos en el estudio de Leo donde ensayamos. Fueron momentos mágicos, entonces realmente decidimos intentar hacer material entre todos nosotros. Manteniendo todo internamente y haciéndolo todo nosotros mismos sin nadie que nos diga que hacer.

Loud Cave: We start talking about you, first of all, how did you meet each other? And the most important thing: why did you start making music together?
Highly Sedated: Well Patrick (Vocals) got in contact with Leo (Production) when they shared publisher before, and they started sending stuff to each other. Patrick was then invited with Verner (Vocals) to a festival and they invited Sebastian (who later left the band) and Hannes to tag along. We had an insane week together that was more than X rated but more importantly we felt the VIBE, the one you look for but can’t force. We had it together, in Leo’s studio when we rehearsed. It was moments of magic and we decided to actually try to do some stuff together all of us. Keeping everything in house and doing everything ourselves without people telling us what to do.

LC: Ahora hablaremos de vuestro ‘fichaje’ por SIZE Records, ¿cómo fue para vosotros que alguien tan importante en la industria electrónica como Steve Angello se fijara en vosotros?
HS: Bueno, esto es impresionante por supuesto. Steve básicamente solo nos dijo: “Haced lo que mejor sabéis hacer y podréis haced lo que queráis”. A él le gustó lo que hacíamos y cómo lo hacíamos. Algunas veces le preguntamos para que nos aconseje y luego él nos echa una mano. Pero solamente quiere que seamos libres y tengamos las herramientas para lanzar buena música. Es por ello por lo que le estaremos siempre agradecidos. Steve es, como todo el mundo sabe, un pionero y es para nosotros un honor tenerlo cerca nuestra.

LC: Now we talk about your “signing” on SIZE Records, how was it for you that someone as important in the electronic music scene as Steve Angello show interest in you?
HS: Well, thats amazing of course. Steve basically just said ‘’Do what you do best and you can do as you like”. He likes what we do and how we do it. Sometimes we ask him for advice and then he helps out. But he just wants us to be free and have the tools to release good music. That we are forever thankful for. Steve is as everyone know a pioneer and we are honored to have him close to us.

LC: En vuestro primer tema por SIZE, “Existence”, nos llamó la atención parte de su letra a la que hacemos referencia ahora: “We didn’t join the circus, so we created our own”. Contadnos, ¿ese circo al que hacéis referencia se refiere a la industria musical actual?
HS: Yeah, sentimos que la industria musical está llena de un montón de gente que habla mucho, que quiere vestir a la última moda y que quiere mostrarnos sus nuevas gafas de sol en Instagram. Echamos de menos algo real, música que te haga sentir y pensar. Así que nosotros empezamos nuestro propio circo.

LC: In your first track on SIZE, “Existence”, caught our attention this part of the lyric “We didn’t WANT TO join the circus, so we created our own”. Tell us, does this circus refer to the actual music industry?
HS: Yeah, we felt like the music industry was filled with a lot of people who talk a lot, want to wear the latest cool clothes and show off their cool sun-glasses on Instagram. We we’re missing something real, music that makes you feel and think. So we started our own circus.  

LC: Meses después de firmar por SIZE, llegó vuestro primer álbum, ¿qué valoración hacéis sobre él?
HS: ¡Sentó genial el lanzamiento del álbum! Un sueño hecho realidad. SIZE fue muy comprensivo y básicamente nos dejó hacer cualquier cosa que quisiéramos.

LC: Months after your signing on SIZE, your first album arrived, what is your valoration about it?
HS: It felt great releasing the album! A dream come true.  
SIZE was very supportive and basically let us do whatever we wanted.

LC: Después de este álbum, salvo la collab con Steve Angello de la que hablaremos más adelante, vimos como estuvisteis un tiempo casi desaparecidos de la escena hasta que reaparecisteis con “Revolution”. Pudimos leer más o menos las causas en una publicación vuestra en vuestro Facebook hace unos días, pero contadnos mejor, ¿Qué creéis que os llevó a esta situación y fue fácil salir de ella?  
HS: Habíamos estado trabajando muy duro en el álbum y estábamos mentalmente exhaustos y sin ideas.
Así que necesitábamos dar un paso atras, respirar hondo y encontrar de nuevo nuestra creatividad.
Nos mudamos al bosque y nos encontramos el uno con el otro y el placer de hacer música de nuevo.
No es solamente presionar un botón y ya sale la canción. Tiene que ser más que eso. Tiene que tener un concepto, un pensamiento, un hilo conductor.
Y como trabajamos de una manera diferente a otros artistas de EDM, nos lleva un poco más de tiempo.

LC: After this album, except your collab with Steve Angello, which we will speak later, we saw how you were almost disappeared from the scene until you reappeared with “Revolution”. We could read more or less the reasons on a recent post on your Facebook, but tell us better, what do you think led you to this situation? Was it easy to get out of it?
HS: We had been working so hard on the album and we were so mentally drained and out of ideas.  
So we needed to take a step back, take some deep breaths and find our creativity again.  
We moved out to the woods and found each other and the joy of making music again.  
It’s not like just pushing a button and out comes a song. It has to be more than that. It has to have a concept, a thought, a red thread.
And since we are working in another way then a lot of EDM artists, it takes a little bit of more time for us.

LC: Analizando más detenidamente la letra de cada uno de los temas que forman vuestra último recopilatorio “Varmland”, vemos reflejada en gran parte esta situación que vivíais, contadnos, ¿cómo fue para vosotros el proceso de creación de estos temas?
HS: Como dijimos, estábamos un poco perdidos después del lanzamiento del álbum. No sabíamos exactamente qué camino tomar musicalmente.
Asi que alquilamos una casa vieja en Värmland, en un bosque del norte sueco, y empezamos a componer canciones y a dar con ideas, sin estrés, simplemente creación.
Y “Värmland” fue el resultado de eso.

LC: Analysing closely the lyric of each track of your latest compilation “Varmland”, we see a part of this situation that you were living. Tell us, how was the process of creating these tracks for you?
HS: Like we said, we we’re kind of lost after the album dropped.  
We didn’t really know which way to go, musically.  
So we rented an old house in Värmland, in a forest up in the Swedish North, and just started making songs and coming up with ideas, free of stress. Just creating.  
And “Varmland” was the result of that.  

LC: Ahora decidnos, después de ese pequeño ‘bache’ que habéis tenido, ¿tenéis nueva música en camino? ¿un nuevo álbum quizás?
HS: Sí, tenemos algunas cosas nuevas en camino
Estamos trabajando en nuevas canciones y quizás en un álbum.
Pero también publicaremos algo muy interesante en relación a nuestros live pronto.

LC: Now tell us, after that bad little time you have lived, do you have new music on the way? Maybe a new album?
HS: Yes, we have some new stuff coming up.  
We’re both working on new songs and perhaps an album.  
But we’re also releasing some very interesting live stuff soon.

LC: Toca hablar ahora de vuestra collab con Steve Angello en el que fue su segundo álbum de estudio “Human”, ¿cómo surgió la idea para esta collab tan esperada por muchos?
HS: Nosotros compartimos el mismo espacio de estudio que Steve, así que a menudo uno escucha el material del otro y viceversa. Steve tenía una idea inicial de “Flashing Lights”, así que nos dio el tema y empezamos a escribir en él. Grabamos las vocales en nuestro estudio de la planta baja y luego le dimos las vocales y él empezó a mezclarlo. El resto es historia.

LC: Now it’s time to talk about your collab with Steve Angello in his second studio album “HUMAN”, how did the idea for this much awaited collab arise?
HS: We share the same studio space as Steve, so we often listen to eachothers stuff . Steve had a demo idea of Flashing Lights, so he gave us the track and we started writing to it. We recorded the vocals in our down-stairs studio and then we gave him the vocals and he started mixing it. The rest is history.   

LC: Hablando de colaboraciones, ¿os gustaría colaborar en un futuro con algún artista en especial?
HS: Un montón de gente dice que sonamos como una versión 2020 de Faithless. Ellos son antiguos héroes de nosotros, así que sería impresionante colaborar con ellos. Con suerte, puede ocurrir en el futuro.

LC: Talking about collaborations, would you like to collaborate in a future with a particular artist?
HS: A lot of people say that we kind of sound like a 2020-version of Faithless.   They are old heroes of ours, so it would be awesome to do a collaboration with them.  
Hopefully it will happen in the future.  

LC: Ahora toca hablar de vuestros live shows. Hemos visto que habéis estado en varios sitios ya como Barcelona, Vilna o Estocolmo, aunque con poca asiduidad, ¿habéis pensado en la posibilidad en un futuro de hacer una gira live?
HS: Nos consideramos una banda de directo y los shows en vivo son lo que más nos gusta. Hay una energía adictiva especial cuando conectas con el público y siempre estamos en su búsqueda.
Eperamos que podamos hacer un tour tan pronto como lancemos el nuevo material.

LC: Now we are going to talk about your live shows. We know that you have been in several places already like Barcelona, Vilnius or Stockholm, although with little assiduity, have you considered the possibility in a future to make a live tour?
HS: We consider ourselves a live-band, and live-shows is what we like best.   There’s some real special addictive energy when you connect with a crowd, and we’re always on the search for that.

LC: Desde este medio siempre apoyamos el talento desconocido que merece más reconocimiento, por eso ahora os preguntamos, ¿escucháis alguno de vosotros a algún artista/s que merezca más reconocimiento?
HS: Daniel Avery es un productor muy telentoso del que disfrutamos.

LC: In Loud Cave we try to help small and unknown producers, could you mention some producer like these that you listen?
HS: Daniel Avery is a really talented producer we enjoy.  

LC: ¿Cómo veis el momento actual de la música electrónica?
HS: Parece que algo tiene que pasarle al género. Es muy artificial y hay muy poco alma en la música. Al menos en el mainstream.
Necesitamos una revolución de la música electrónica. Necesitamos devolverle el poder a los creadores y deshacernos de la música empresarial artificial de My-Little-Pony.

LC: How do you see the current moment of electronic music?
It feel like something needs to happen to the genre. It’s very plastic and there’s so little soul in the music. At least in the mainstream.
We need an electronic music revolution. We need to give back the power to the creators and get rid of the corporate, plastic My-Little-Pony music.
