¡Hola cavernícolas! En esta nueva entrevista de hard charlamos con Andy The Core, un DJ y productor italiano que lleva muchos años en la élite del hardcore. Papel y boli porque, ¡empezamos!

Loud Cave: Hola Andy, ¡bienvenido a Loud Cave! Es un auténtico placer para nosotros contar en la cueva con uno de los máximos exponentes del hardcore a nivel mundial. Teniendo en cuenta que está siendo un año lleno de releases para ti, cuéntanos, ¿cómo te encuentras?

Andy The Core: Hola chicos, en primer lugar gracias por dejarme compartir mis pensamientos con vosotros, ¡es un placer! Estoy muy bien; nunca he estado tan inspirado como en este comienzo de 2023. ¡Muchos temas en camino! ¡Estoy súper bien!

Loud Cave: Hi Andy, welcome to Loud Cave! It’s a real pleasure for us to have one of the world’s leading exponents of hardcore in the cave. Considering that it’s been a year full of releases for you, tell us, how are you feeling?

Andy The Core: Hi guys, first of all thank you for let me share my thoughts with you, it’s a pleasure! I’m doing great; never being so inspired like in this beginning of 2023. Tons of tracks on the way! I’m super good!

LC: Eres italiano, un país donde, a priori, se valoran los harder styles. Conociste el hardcore a la temprana edad de 13 años, así que nos gustaría saber como ha sido la evolución de la escena hard en tu país desde tus inicios en la música hasta la actualidad.

ATC: El hardcore en Italia fue una gran parte de nuestra cultura musical underground. Es realmente algo antiguo; la discoteca Number One ya hacía sonar hardcore en los años 90. Creo que junto con Holanda, Italia es uno de los países más productivos en términos de producción de hardcore. La escena ha cambiado radicalmente a lo largo de los años al igual que en toda la industria musical; las redes sociales y la música digital cambiaron el juego por completo.

LC: You are Italian, a country where hard styles are valued. You got to know hardcore at the early age of 13, so we would like to know how has been the evolution of the hardcore scene in your country since your beginnings in music until nowadays.

ATC: Hardcore in Italy was a great part of our underground music culture. It’s really something old; Number One disco delivered hardcore already in the 90’s. I think that, with Holland, Italy is one of the most productive countries in terms of hardcore production. The scene has changed radically during the years, as has happened in all the music industry; social networks and the digital music changed the game completely.

LC: Además de tu alias principal, has formado parte de grupos como Brutale (con The Sickest Squad y Meccano Twins), Sick & Core (sólo con The Sickest Squad) y Digital Plague Squad (junto a X-Mind). Está claro que has tenido una muy buena relación con otros artistas italianos. ¿Puedes contarnos cómo fue tu experiencia en estos grupos?

ATC: Fue un viaje increíble. Creo que la cooperación es la mejor manera de aprender y crecer; me encantaba formar parte de esos grupos. ¡Brutale fue algo enorme en aquellos tiempos! Siempre he tenido una relación muy fuerte con mis amigos, como he mencionado.

LC: Besides your main alias, you have been part of bands like Brutale (with The Sickest Squad and Meccano Twins), Sick & Core (only with The Sickest Squad) and Digital Plague Squad (with X-Mind). It is clear that you have had a very good relationship with other Italian artists. Can you tell us how was your experience in these groups?

ATC: It was an amazing journey. I think that cooperation is the best way to learn and grow up; I loved being part of those groups. Brutale was a huge thing back in the days! I’m always in a strong relationship with my friends, as I mentioned.

LC: Tenemos constancia de que, además del hardcore, has disfrutado de otros géneros musicales como DnB, techno o rock metal. ¿Cómo surgió tu pasión por la música? ¿Cómo acabaste produciendo hardcore? ¿Tocas algún instrumento?

ATC: Toqué la guitarra durante un tiempo, pero lo mío es la música electrónica. Mi hermana estudió piano durante años, crecí escuchando su música, y al ser mayor que yo me introdujo en ella. Cuando éramos jóvenes escuchábamos música juntos buscando la mejor música alternativa. Descubrí el metal, crossover, nu metal, techno, DnB… La mezcla de todos estos estilos me llevó al hardcore, y después de escucharlo dije… “Wow, esta es MI música”.

LC: We know that, besides hardcore, you have enjoyed other music genres like DnB, techno or metal rock. How did your passion for music come about? How did you end up producing hardcore? Do you play any instruments?

ATC: I played guitar for a while, but electronic music is definitely my thing. My sister studied piano for years, i grew up listening to her music, and she’s older than me, so she introduced me into it. When we were young we listened to music together searching for the best alternative music. I came across with metal, crossover, nu metal, techno, DnB… The mix of all these styles led me to discovering hardcore, and after I listened to it I said…”Wow, that’s MY music”.

LC: Eres el owner del sello Rude Vibes. ¿Por qué decidiste abrir un sello personal?

ATC: Rude Vibes nació durante la pandemia. Matt (Nightshift), Simone (Whynot) y yo decidimos crear un sello independiente, libre y sin fronteras, en primer lugar para publicar nuestra propia música sin restricciones. Por otro lado, también para dar la oportunidad a muchos artistas emergentes de expresarse con su música. Abrir Rude Vibes fue la mejor decisión de mi vida; estoy muy contento con el resultado y orgulloso del equipo que tenemos.

LC: You are the owner of the label Rude Vibes. Why did you decide to open a personal label?

ATC: Rude Vibes was born during the pandemic. Matt (Nightshift), Simone (Whynot) and me decided to start an independent, free label with no boundaries, first of all to release our own music with no restrictions. On the other hand, also to give the opportunity to many upcoming artists to express themselves with their music. Opening Rude Vibes was the best decision ever; I’m so happy about the result and I’m proud of the team we have.

LC: Uno de tus últimos lanzamientos, ‘HARDCORE IS FOREVER’, hace continuas referencias al hardcore oldschool mediante sonidos de los 90. ¿Qué opinas de la “lucha” que tienen los amantes del hardcore moderno y los amantes del hardcore más clásico? ¿Es esto lo que quieres plasmar en este track?

ATC: ‘HARDCORE IS FOREVER’ será el comienzo de una nueva forma de hacer música. Han cambiado muchas cosas en la escena, han surgido muchos subgéneros y yo también he evolucionado mucho, pero ahora quiero “reimaginar” lo que me gustaba escuchar antes de convertirme en productor. Intentaré fundir lo “viejo” y lo “nuevo” de forma que pueda entretener a las “viejas” y “nuevas” generaciones.

LC: One of your latest releases, ‘HARDCORE IS FOREVER’, makes continuous references to oldschool hardcore through 90’s sounds. What do you think about the “fight” between mainstream hardcore lovers and oldschool hardcore lovers? Is this what you want to show in this track?

ATC: ‘HARDCORE IS FOREVER‘ will be the start of a new way in which I will make music. Many things actually changed in the scene, many sub genres came up, and I also evolved a lot, but now I’m on a point that I want to “re-imagine” what I loved to listen before I started to become a producer. I will try to melt down “old” and “new” in a way that could entertain “old” generations and “new” generations.

LC: Has colaborado con Unicorn On Ketamine en repetidas ocasiones. Véanse ‘GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME’, ‘KETA LOVER’ y ‘SPEED ME SPEED ME SPEED ME SPEED ME’. ¿Cómo es vuestra sinergia en el estudio? ¿Disfrutas del estilo de uptempo hardcore tan extremo del unicornio?

ATC: UOK es uno de los productores más locos de la escena, y ha sido un buen amigo desde entonces. Empezamos a colaborar con ‘GIMME’, que ya tiene 2 millones de streams. Después de eso dijimos: “bueno, ¡deberíamos colaborar más!”. Los piep kicks resultan divertidos durante un pequeño rato en un set , y es por eso que pinché algunas de nuestras colaboraciones en mi sesión, pero no estoy listo para un set de 60 minutos como él lol :D

LC: You have collaborated with Unicorn On Ketamine on several occasions. See ‘GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME’, ‘KETA LOVER’ and ‘SPEED ME SPEED ME SPEED ME SPEED ME’. How is your synergy in the studio? Do you enjoy the extreme uptempo hardcore style of the unicorn?

ATC: UOK is one of the most insane acts on the scene, and has been a good friend ever since! We started to cooperate with ‘GIMME’, which already has 2 million streams. After that we said: “well, we should do more!”. Piep kicks are funny for a short time in a set, and that’s why I dropped some of our collabs in my set, but I’m not ready for a 60 minutes set like him lol :D

LC: Además de con Unicorn, has hecho canciones con varios artistas españoles. Algunos ejemplos serían con Parkineos en ‘NARKOS’, con MBK en ‘Crazy Things At Night’, con eDUB en ‘CHOKE’, con Ender en ‘Hari Hari’, con San284 en ‘HARDCORE SLAVE’ o con Lady Dammage en ’I8U’. Teniendo en cuenta que pinchaste en la 150 de Fabrik en marzo de este año, está claro que has tenido siempre una estrecha relación con el hard español. ¿Cómo ves la escena en nuestro país?

ATC: Creo que los italianos y los españoles somos muy parecidos; tenemos buenas conexiones y buen rollo cuando estamos juntos. Me encantó trabajar con todos ellos y volveré a hacerlo en el futuro.

LC: In addition to Unicorn, you have made songs with various Spanish artists. Some examples would be with Parkineos in ‘NARKOS’, with MBK in ‘Crazy Things At Night’, with eDUB in ‘CHOKE’, with Ender in ‘Hari Hari’, with San284 in ‘HARDCORE SLAVE’ or with Lady Damage in ‘I8U’. Bearing in mind that you played in Fabrik’s 150 in March of this year, it’s clear that you’ve always had a close relationship with the Spanish hard scene. How do you see the scene in our country?

ATC: I think Italian and Spanish people are extremely similar; we have good connections and good vibes when we are together. I loved to work with all of them and I will work again with them in the future.

LC: Has colaborado con artistas de rawstyle en alguna ocasión, como por ejemplo con So Juice en ‘On A Mission’ o con Malice en ‘Feel So Good’. ¿Cómo es trabajar con productores de raw? ¿Qué opinas de la moda de los zaag kicks (bombos de uptempo a BPM de raw)?

ATC: Sí, también trabajé con Dynamite & Pherato en Dirty Workz; es genial mezclar diferentes influencias. Creo que esta nueva tendencia de “zaag” dividirá un poco la escena; muchos fans piden volver a los viejos estilos.

LC: You’ve collaborated with rawstyle artists on occasion, such as So Juice on ‘On A Mission’ or Malice on ‘Feel So Good’. What is it like working with raw producers? What do you think of the trend towards zaag kicks (uptempo kicks at raw BPM)?

ATC: Yeah, I also worked with Dynamite & Pherato on Dirty Workz; it’s so cool to mix different influences. I think that this new trend of “zaag” will split the scene a little bit; many fans are asking to go back to old styles.

LC: En 2020 lanzaste vía Overdrive Digital (el subsello hardcore de Gearbox) el álbum Undisputed, el cual contó con interesantes colaboraciones con artistas de renombre como Remzcore, Lil Texas, The Satan o Rob Gee (entre otros muchos). ¿Escucharemos algún otro LP de Andy The Core?

ATC: Ese fue mi segundo álbum, pero muy pronto sacaré un tercero. Como dije antes, será algo diferente.

LC: In 2020 you released the album Undisputed via Overdrive Digital (Gearbox’s hardcore sublabel), which featured interesting collaborations with renowned artists such as Remzcore, Lil Texas, The Satan or Rob Gee (among many others). Will we hear any other Andy The Core LP?

ATC: It was my second album, but I will come up definitely with a third album very soon. As I said before, it will be something different.

LC: ¿Cómo es Andy The Core en cabina?

ATC: Ese es el momento en el que realmente no pienso en nada más. Puedes dejarme pinchar durante 6 horas, no me importa. Me encanta interactuar con el público y tocar la canción adecuada en el momento adecuado. Siempre intento dar toda mi energía durante el set.

LC: How is Andy The Core in the booth?

ATC: That’s the moment when I really don’t think about anything else. You can let me play for 6 hours, I don’t care. I just love to interact with the crowd and to play the right song at the right moment. I always try to give all my energy during the set.

ATC: Mmmmh es una decisión difícil ahora mismo. Digamos que millenium hardcore :D
