Entrevistando a: San Holo

At what point in your career did you realize that the world of electronic music was serious and was going to stop being only a hobby?

Probably after the Dr. Dre remix got picked up by a lot of blogs and listeners. Until that point I was still in the experimentation phase. But after that remix things got a lot more serious!

P- Es innegable que “We Rise” y el remix a “The Next Episode” son probablemente tus mayores éxitos, ¿Qué consecuencias tuvo el lanzamiento de dichos temas para tu carrera?
It’s undeniable that “We Rise” and the remix to “The Next Episode” are probably your biggest hits, what consequences had the launch of those songs for your career?

A lot has changed! The whole ‘Don’t Touch the Classic’ series was me trying to find my sound through making remixes and a lot of people seemed to be liking what I was doing with those remixes. As well as for We Rise. It has opened a lot of doors and the whole thing has just been growing ever since.

How do you see yourself in five years?

Honestly, if I could be doing what I’m doing right now in 5 years, that would be great! Writing songs, promoting artists that deserve to be heard with bitbird, touring, stuff like that. Lately, I’ve been thinking about whether I want to write an album or not so we’ll see what that process looks like after my tour.

San Holo is undoubtedly characterized by its unique style. In what is your style based?

No me importa a qué género pertenezca esa canción.
I don’t like to be defined by a specific genre or style. If a song is good, it’s good! It doesn’t matter to me which genre that song is in. I like exploring new sounds and seeing how far I can push boundaries while making sure it has that San Holo sound.

What do you think of the boom of future bass, that has made many of the artists make songs of that genre? We would like to know how it feels to see all the artists suddenly produce the style you were already doing quite successfully

I think it has brought a lot of great artists over the past years! But I also think that “future bass” is not gonna last for very long and is definitely past its peak.

P- ¿Por qué decidiste tocar la guitarra en tus shows? ¿Podría haber un futuro San Holo Live Show?
Why did you decide to play the guitar in your shows? Could there be a future San Holo Live Show?

I started out playing guitar when I was 13 and I also studied guitar at the Rotterdam Conservatory and I was always playing in bands growing up. I ditched guitar playing for a bit when I started with the San Holo project. But now, I’m incorporating guitar as well as singing in my songs again. So I thought it’d be cool to also involve these things in my shows! For now I’m going to be doing the DJ/Live hybrid thing. But we’ll see what the future holds!

P- ¿Por qué decidiste crear tu propio sello, bitbird?
Why did you decide to create your own label, bitbird?

bitbird started out as a promotional platform. But soon after we decided to make a record label out of it. We felt there was so much amazing music out there that just weren’t being heard. We wanted to give those guys and girls a platform. Whether it’s a banger by Taska Black, a classical piano piece by Analogue Dear or an indie song by The Nicholas. We just want to release music that moves and touches us.

On your label, bitbird, it is very usual to find unknown artists with incredible talent, such as we have heard in Gouldian Finch #02, How do you discover these artists and what are you looking for in them?

R- Siempre estamos buscando.
We’re always looking. We’ve had the good fortune of discovering some incredibly talented artists when they were only at like 100 followers on SoundCloud. Other than that it’s introductions from other musicians or friends and our demo inbox.

What does it feel like to see how your own project, bitbird, is advancing in leaps and bounds thanks to the musical talent of its artists?

It’s awesome seeing people relate to what we release with the label. Whether it’s a banger or classical piece, a lot of the fans are just so open to what we do and that’s what makes it so special. It’s really humbling!

How did you get the collaboration with Monstercat for ADE? How did you feel about how the Canadian label, which in part contributed to your growth, worked in tandem with your own project?

They’ve always been super supportive to me and bitbird since very early on and the feeling is mutual! Even though we release completely different styles of music, we both just have the same love for music! It was great to sell out at Dutch Venue with them. It was such an amazing night and I can’t wait to see what’s next for both us and them.

P- Es bastante difícil encontrar colaboraciones como “If Only”, con tantos artistas participando. ¿Cómo hicisteis la canción? ¿Cuál fue el papel de cada uno?
It’s quite difficult to find collaborations like “If Only”, with so many artists participating. How did you make the song? What was the role of each one?

I always had the idea of doing a massive collaboration. A song where you could hear all the artist’s different sounds, but still have it be a cohesive song. I came up with the main idea, EASTGHOST did the amazing vocals, Analogue Dear in charge of piano, Taska Black made the second drop and Droeloe, Losi, ILIVEHERE. and Goslo filled in the rest with their unique sounds.

What do you think of Dj Mag, magazine that recently made public its controversial Top 100 Djs, in which you are not included? Personally, we don’t give credibility to this top, but we would like to know your opinion.

Of course I would be honoured if I were in it, but it’s not my main focus. I really see myself as a producer first and DJ second.

If you had to do a top 5 dj’s/producers, what would it be?

R-
EASTGHOST
DROELOE
Taska Black
Kasbo
Wiwek

P- Este verano actuaste en Portugal, ¿Te gustaría actuar en España? ¿Tienes planeado hacerlo pronto?
This summer you performed in Portugal. Would you like to perform in Spain? Do you plan to do it soon?

R- ¡Sin lugar a duda!
For sure! I played in Barcelona once about two years ago, but would definitely like to come back to Spain.

What would you say is your favorite song and why?

At the moment, it’s Bagagedrager by Spinvis. I know it’s a Dutch song, but this one moves me every single time.

P- Si pudieras elegir una colaboración, ¿Con qué artista sería?
If you could choose a collaboration, which who artist would it be?

R- ¡Definitivamente me encantaría trabajar con Kanye algún día!
I would absolutely would love to work with Kanye someday!

Do you know any Spanish artist who has caught your eye?

Acaba de lanzar un genial remix a “I Still See Your Face”.
Yeah, I’m in love with Lotus at the moment. He just released a very cool remix for “I Still See Your Face”

Thank you so much for answer our questions. It has been a pleasure for us to receive you in the “cave”. We hope that your career keeps developing successfully. The music industry needs more projects like Bitbird, which support musical talent and not the number of followers. A big hug.

¡Gracias! <3
