El dúo inglés de dnb cumple 15 años de carrera y se pasa por nuestra cueva para hablar de ello.
Hace unos días analizábamos el nuevo álbum de DC Breaks “DCXV”. Un álbum con el que este ya mítico dúo celebraba su quince aniversario de carrera y dejaba marcado su amor por todos los géneros del dnb. Hoy, estos artistas insignia de RAM Records se han pasado por Loud Cave para hablar de ello y de muchos temas más.
Loud Cave: Primero de todo, enhorabuena por ese 15 aniversario de vuestra carrera. ¿Cómo os sentís sobre tener una carrera tan larga hasta ahora?
Chris: Realmente agradecido para ser honesto, nunca hubiera pensado cuando comenzamos que hubiéramos hecho tanto, llegado tan lejos y durado tanto tiempo.
Dan: Hemos tenido tantos momentos destacados que es realmente increíble. Ciertamente, nunca esperábamos algo como el viaje en el que hemos estado. La escena ha crecido mucho y nosotros hemos crecido con ella.
Loud Cave: First of all, congratulations for that 15th anniversary of your career. How do you feel about having such a long career so far?
Chris: Really blessed to be honest, I would never have thought when we started out that we would have done so much, come so far and lasted this long!
Dan: We’ve had so many highlights it’s really quite incredible. We certainly never expected anything like the journey we’ve been on. The scene has grown so much, and we have grown with it.
LC: Quince años ligados al drum n ‘bass, ¿qué crees que es lo que más ha cambiado en el género a lo largo de estos años? ¿Y en vuestra música?
DC: Han cambiado tantas cosas que es difícil precisar una sola. Cuando comenzamos, Internet todavía estaba en su infancia, realmente no había Youtube, Spotify, las descargas estaban comenzando a convertirse en algo, los CDJ apenas comenzaban a ser algo. El lado tecnológico de las cosas ha cambiado más allá de todo reconocimiento. El acceso a los equipos y software de producción se ha vuelto mucho más fácil y económico, la calidad es mucho mayor y los recursos disponibles para aprender a través de tutoriales en línea, etc. son enormes ahora. Nada de eso era el caso hace 15 años. También hemos visto a DnB difundirse por todo el mundo, lo cual es genial de ver. Solía ser sólo prominente en algunos pequeños lugares aquí y allá fuera del Reino Unido.
LC: Fifteen years linked to drum n’ bass music, what do you feel is the thing that has changed the most in the genre through this years? And in your music?
DC: So much has changed it’s hard to pin-point one single thing. When we started out the internet was still in its infancy really, there was no Youtube, Spotify, downloads were just starting to become a thing, CDJs were just starting to become a thing. The technology side of things has changed beyond all recognition. Access to production equipment and software has become far easier and cheaper, the quality is far higher and the resources available to learn via online tutorials etc are just vast now. None of that was the case 15 years ago. We’ve also seen DnB spread around the world which is great to see. It used to be really only prominent in a few small pockets here and there outside the UK.
LC: Más o menos habitualmente vemos dúos dividiéndose en la música electrónica después de algunos años de carrera, ¿alguna vez habéis pensado en hacer esto para seguir caminos diferentes?
DC: Siempre hemos tenido nuestras propias cosas fuera de DC Breaks también, así que creo que debido a que nunca ha sido nuestro único enfoque, siempre lo hemos tenido allí para trabajar y en diferentes momentos uno u otro de nosotros ha liderado la carga con eso. Quizás si no fuéramos un dúo, podría haberse agotado en diferentes momentos. Estoy seguro de que en algún momento en el futuro podemos hacer otras cosas también, ¡pero esperamos que todavía tengamos tiempo para mantener DC Breaks funcionando a alguna capacidad para que nos podamos ver en otros 15 años!
LC: More or less usually we see duos splitting in electronic music after some years of career, have you ever thought about doing this to follow different paths?
DC: We have always had our own things going on outside DC Breaks as well, so I think because it’s never been our sole focus we have just always had it there to work on and at different times one or other of us has lead the charge with it. Perhaps if we weren’t a duo it may have petered out at different times. I’m sure at some point in the future we may do other things too but we’ll hopefully still have time to keep DC Breaks going in some capacity so we can see in another 15 years!
LC: Para celebrar estos quince años habéis lanzado vuestro segundo álbum de estudio llamado “DCXV”, ¿qué queríais expresar con esos doce temas?
DC: Para nosotros, la diversidad dentro de DnB es realmente clave. Amamos todos los estilos dentro del género, -esa diversidad es lo que lo mantiene interesante para nosotros- y cuando actuamos, queremos pinchar todos los ámbitos del DnB. Entonces, la música que hacemos es una extensión de eso. Está principalmente dirigido a la pista de baile, pero dentro de eso puede ser el vibe del pico de neurofunk de las 4 AM o puede ser algo más liquid. “DCXV” es nuestra expresión de eso: lo que nos gusta pinchar y una celebración de diferentes estilos de DnB de pista de baile.
LC: To celebrate this fifteen years you’ve released your second studio album called “DCXV”, what did you want to express with those twelve tracks?
DC: For us diversity within DnB is really key. We love all the styles within the genre – that diversity is what keeps it interesting for us – and when we play out, we want to play across the board. So, the music we make is an extension of that. It’s mostly aimed at the dance floor but within that it can be peak 4am grotty Neurofunk vibes or it can be something more Liquid. “DCXV” is our expression of that – what we like to play out and a celebration of different styles of (dancefloor) DnB.
LC: Siempre escuchamos una variedad de estilos en vuestra música pero, dentro de los subgéneros de dnb, ¿cuál diríais que es el que más os representa?
DC: Cada uno de nosotros nos inclinamos en diferentes direcciones: Dan tiende a estar más interesado en Liquid, el lado más musical de las cosas y Chris tiende a ser más acerca de las líneas de base y la batería, ‘techy jump up’ en realidad.
LC: We always listen to a variety of styles in your music but, inside dnb subgenres, which would you say is the one that represents you the most?
DC: We each lean in different directions – Dan tends to be more interested in Liquid, the more musical side of things and Chris tends to be more about the baselines and drums, ’techy jump up’ really.
LC: Está claro que a estas alturas sois unos de los artistas insignia de RAM Records, ¿cómo os sentís sobre vuestro puesto dentro del sello?
DC: Sigue siendo un honor formar parte de RAM como lo fue cuando firmamos por primera vez hace tantos años. Ha sido el hogar de algunos nombres increíbles y sentarse en ese contexto es increíble, solo esperamos poder seguir siendo parte de su historia y enarbolar la bandera de RAM por todo el mundo.
LC: It is clear that at this point you are one of the flagship artists of RAM Records, how do you feel about your position inside the label?
DC: It’s still as much of an honour to be part of RAM as it was when we first signed all those years ago. It’s been home to some amazing names and to sit in that context is amazing, we just hope we can continue to be a part of their story and fly the flag for RAM around the world.
LC: ¿Cuánto sabéis de la escena del drum n ‘bass en España? ¿Os gusta actuar en el país?
DC: Hemos tocado en varios grandes shows en España, ¡la escena parece fuerte! Siempre es un placer venir a tocar para vosotros, y España se siente muy diferente al Reino Unido, por lo que normalmente también es un descanso refrescante. De hecho, Dan pasó muchos años pinchando breaks en España como VENT en su día, y también se casó en España, así que siempre habrá una conexión cercana para nosotros allí.
LC: How much do you know about the drum n’ bass scene in Spain? Do you like to play in the country?
DC: We’ve played several great shows in Spain, the scene seems strong! It’s always a pleasure to come and play for you guys, and Spain feels very different to the UK so it’s a refreshing break normally as well. Actually, Dan spent many years DJing breaks in Spain as VENT back in the day, and he also got married in Spain too so there will always be a close connection there for us.
LC: Con este aniversario y un nuevo álbum, ¿cuáles son vuestros planes para el futuro cercano y vuestros planes para el futuro lejano?
DC: Tenemos muchas cosas interesantes en proceso relacionadas con “DCXV”: una competición de remezclas y un EP de remezclas que incluirá el remix ganador. Actualmente también estamos trabajando en nuestro propio VST (Virtual Studio Technology), que se está desarrollando muy bien y se está convirtiendo en algo genial, pero no podemos decir mucho más al respecto en este momento. En general, nos estamos tomando un pequeño descanso de la producción, pero haremos más música (¡especialmente una vez que se construya el nuevo estudio de Chris!)
LC: With this anniversary and a new album out, what are your near future plans and your far future plans?
DC: We have lots of cool stuff in the pipeline related to DCXV – a remix competition and a remix bundle which will include the winning remix on it. We’re currently also working on our own VST which is developing really nicely and evolving into something very cool, but we can’t say too much more about it at the moment. Bigger picture we are taking a small break from writing but will be making more music (particularly once Chris’s new studio is built!).

DC: Skantia, quien remezcló nuestro tema “Concrete Jungle” es un muy joven y talentoso productor y alguien a quien seguir de cerca en la plantilla de RAM.
LC: A young dnb artist with much talent?
DC: Skantia who remixed our track “Concrete Jungle” is a very young and talented producer and one to watch in the RAM camp.
