El artista de dubstep NAZAAR realizó un gran 2021, lanzando gran cantidad de música por distintos sellos. Ahora nos cuenta en La Cueva su historia y su visión como artista.
Loud Cave: Primero de todo, queremos que la gente te conozca un poco más a nivel personal. Te criaste entre Pakistán y los Estados Unidos, algo que se puede verse impreso en tu música. Cuéntanos más sobre tu historia.
NAZAAR: Soy hijo de la primera generación de inmigrantes paquistaníes en los EE.UU., por lo que mi cultura fue (y sigue siendo) una gran parte de mi identidad mientras crecía. De niño mis padres siempre me decían que era importante estar orgulloso de tu herencia, y mi mejor manera de expresarme y estar orgulloso de mi ascendencia era a través de la música. Empecé a hacer música más enfocada en el Medio Oriente a principios de 2018 y, desde entonces, fue una forma increíble para mí de contar historias.
Crecí con poca o ninguna experiencia musical, así que escribía música sin conocimientos de teoría musical, ni siquiera sabía leer partituras. Elegí producir en 2014, ¡y lo he hecho desde entonces!
Loud Cave: First of all, we want the people to know you a little bit more personally. You were raised between Pakistan and the United States, something that can be seen printed in your music. Tell us more about your story.
NAZAAR: I’m a first generation child of Pakistani immigrants in the US, so my culture was (and still is) a huge part of my identity growing up. As a child my parents always told me it was important to be proud of your heritage, and my best way to express myself and be proud of my ancestry was through music. I started making more middle-eastern focused music in early 2018, and since then it was an amazing way for me to tell stories.
I grew up with little to no musical experience, so I was writing music with no knowledge of music theory, or knowing how to even read sheet music. I picked up producing in 2014, and ran with it since!
LC: ¿Cuándo te empezaste a interesar por la música bass? ¿Y cuándo decidiste empezar a producirla?
N: Descubrí la bass music en 2014, los primeros momentos de Skrillex, y ahí es cuando comenzó mi viaje. No fue hasta 2017-18 que comencé a escribir más temas de dubstep/hybrid trap, y fue un gran cambio de ritmo con respecto a las cosas que estaba escribiendo antes, se sentía como un mundo completamente nuevo e inexplorado para mí.
LC: When did you get that interest in bass music? And when did you decide to start producing it?
N: I found bass music in 2014, the early Skrillex days, and that’s where my journey began. It wasn’t up until 2017-18 that I started writing more dubstep/hybrid trap records, and it was a huge change of pace from the stuff I was writing before, it felt like a whole new unexplored world for me.
LC: Desde nuestro punto de vista tu EP de 2019 en Never Say Die fue un antes y un después en tu carrera. Para mucha gente, incluyéndonos a nosotros, fue tu carta de presentación. ¿Sentiste ese cambio en tu carrera con ese lanzamiento?
N: “The Legacy EP” fue un gran trampolín para mí, fue mi carta de presentación en el mundo de la música bass, pero sólo había estado haciendo dubstep durante unos meses antes de que saliera ese EP. Siempre estaré agradecido por ese EP porque fue un momento decisivo en mi carrera y me ayudó a encontrar mi sonido. También me ayudó a obtener apoyo y relaciones con algunos de mis ídolos como Excision y Zomboy.
LC: In our eyes your 2019 EP on Never Say Die was a before and an after in your career. For many people including us, it was your presentation letter. Did you feel that change in your career with that release?
N: The Legacy EP was a huge stepping stone for me, it was my introduction letter to the bass music world, but also I had only been making dubstep for like a few months before that EP came out. I’ll always be thankful for that EP because it was a defining moment in my career path, and helped me to find my sound. It also helped me gain support and relationships with some of my idols like Excision and Zomboy.
LC: Los sonidos de Oriente Medio mezclados con el dubstep más duro es algo que hace que tu sonido sea muy único, pero este año pasado has estado experimentando con nuevos sonidos como el melódico en “Headspace”. ¿Sentías que era algo que necesitabas en este punto? ¿Te veremos más veces en ese lado melódico?
N: La música del Medio Oriente es parte de mi identidad, y siempre lo será, pero últimamente he estado escribiendo temas más emotivos porque es otra forma de contar mi historia. Crecí con grandes problemas de identidad, no sabía a qué culturas pertenecía, y eso dio forma a muchas experiencias en mi vida y me llevó a convertirme en quien soy hoy. Definitivamente escucharéis muchos más tracks emotivos por mi parte, porque mi historia acaba de comenzar y hay mucho más que quiero decir.
LC: The ‘Middle East’ sounds mixed with hard dubstep is something that makes your sound very unique, but this last year you’ve been experimenting with new sounds like the melodic one in “Headspace”. Did you feel that you needed that at this point? Will we see you more times in that melodic side?
N: Middle Eastern music is a part of my identity, and it always will be, but lately I’ve been writing more emotional records because it’s another way for me to tell my story. I grew up with huge identity issues, I didn’t know which cultures I belonged to, and that shaped a lot of experiences in my life, and led me to become who I am today. You’ll definitely be hearing a lot more emotional records from me because my story has only just begun, and there’s a lot more I want to say.
LC: Has tenido un 2021 muy activo en cuanto a lanzamientos, muchos de ellos sencillos. ¿Tienes más EPs planeados para este nuevo año? ¿O quizá es el momento para tu álbum debut?
N: Estoy trabajando en un nuevo EP ahora mismo, será una pequeña mezcla del NAZAAR clásico y las cosas nuevas. Estoy muy emocionado de poder armar un EP que tiene un interés personal muy profundo para mí, y debería estar listo a principios de 2022.
LC: You’ve had such an active year releasing music, most of them being singles. Do you have more EPs planned for this new year? Or maybe it is time for a debut album?
N: I’m working on a new EP right now, it’s going to be a little mix of the classic NAZAAR and the new stuff, I’m really excited to be able to put together an EP that has really deep personal interest to me, and it should be ready by early 2022.
LC: Has lanzado música en muchos sellos diferentes como Never Say Die, Space Yacht, Bassrush… Y también de manera independiente. ¿Ha sido difícil para ti encontrar un lugar para tus lanzamientos? ¿Te gustaría firmar como parte del roster de un sello?
N: ¡La belleza de EDM es que el hogar está donde quieras que esté! He trabajado con muchísimos equipos de sellos increíbles a lo largo de los años, pero recientemente he estado lanzando por libre todo mi trabajo. Tengo una visión creativa que quiero ejecutar, y creo que poder controlar todos los aspectos de mis lanzamientos se ha convertido en una herramienta muy importante para mí a lo largo de los años. Al menos por ahora no tengo planes inmediatos de ser exclusivo con ningún sello.
LC: You’ve released on many different labels such as Never Say Die, Space Yacht, Bassrush.. and also by yourself. Has it been difficult for you to find a place for your releases? Would you like to sign for a label roster?
N: The beauty of EDM is that home is wherever you want it to be! I’ve worked with so many amazing label teams throughout the years, but recently I’ve been self releasing all my work. I have a creative vision I want to execute, and I think being able to control every aspect of my releases has become such an important tool to me through the years. At least for now I have no immediate plans on being exclusive with any labels.
LC: ¿Cuáles son tus pensamientos y sensaciones sobre la escena dubstep en estos momentos? ¿Por qué piensas que en Estados Unidos es mucho más popular que en otros países?
N: El dubstep está en su fase de ‘dolores del crecimiento’. Mucha de la música bass que escuchamos en este momento suena inquietantemente similar, y eso es lo más decepcionante. Creo que a medida que el género siga creciendo, tendremos innovadores y seguidores y eso definirá el futuro del género en su conjunto. En los EE.UU. tenemos muchísimos eventos centrados en Dubstep como Lost Lands, Forbidden Kingdom, Bass Canyon, etc. Y es una forma increíble para que las personas se conecten y disfruten de la música a mayor escala. Eso es algo que no vemos a menudo en otros países, y es por lo que vemos un crecimiento increíble en los Estados Unidos en los últimos años.
LC: What are your thoughts and feels about the dubstep scene at the moment? Why do you think that in the United States is much more popular than in other countries?
N: Dubstep is in its growing pains phase. A lot of bass music we’re hearing right now sounds eerily similar, and that’s the most disappointing thing. I think as the genre continues to grow, we’ll have innovators and followers and that’ll define the future of the genre as a whole. In the US we have so many Dubstep centered events like Lost Lands, Forbidden Kingdom, Bass Canyon, etc… and it’s an awesome way for people to connect and enjoy the music at a larger scale. That’s something we don’t see often in other countries, which is why we see it’s insane growth in the states over the last few years.
LC: Esta es simplemente por curiosidad en este punto. ¿Cómo conseguiste que Kodiyak Redd (uno de los ‘Island Boys’ del vídeo viral) promocionara tu última canción “With U” en un vídeo?
N: Hahah me preguntan esto mucho, ¡pero sinceramente es sólo un vídeo que le pedí que hiciera a través de Cameo!
LC: This one is just curiosity at this point. How did you get Kodiyak Redd (The Island Boy) to promote your last song “With U” in a video?
N: Hahah I got this question a lot, but truthfully it’s just a cameo video I asked him to make!

LC: ¿Una explicación rápida de tu nombre artístico?
N: NAZAAR es la palabra urdu-árabe para “El mal de ojo”, que es un amuleto o talismán que se dice que te protege de los celos de las personas o de las malas intenciones hacia ti. Si llevas contigo el mal de ojo estás protegido.
LC: A quick explanation of your artist name?
N: NAZAAR is the Urdu-Arabic word for “The Evil Eye” – which is a charm or talisman that is said to protect you from people’s jealousy or bad intentions towards you. If you wear the evil eye you’re protected.
LC: ¿Tu meta principal en este momento tanto artísticamente como personalmente?
N: Solo quiero continuar expandiendo los límites entre la música dura y la emocional. ¡Escribir canciones con las que puedas llorar, volverte loco o pasar el rato! Al final del día, disfruto haciendo lo que se me ocurra, pero lo más importante es que quiero escribir canciones con las que la gente pueda identificarse. Personalmente, solo quiero trabajar para convertirme en una mejor versión de mí mismo. Tengo muchísimos objetivos personales en los que quiero mejorar, y con el comienzo de un nuevo año no hay mejor momento para comenzar a lograrlos.
LC: Your main goal at the moment artistically and also personally?
N: I just want to continue to push the envelope between hard music and emotional records. Writing songs that you can cry to, rage to, or hang out to! At the end of the day I enjoy making whatever comes to me, but more importantly I want to write songs people can relate to. Personally I just want to work on becoming a better version of myself. I have so many personal goals I want to improve on, and with the start of a new year there is no better time to start accomplishing my goals.
