Hola cavernícolas, ¡bienvenidos a la primera entrevista del año! Hoy viajamos a Francia para charlar con un joven productor emergente que se debate entre dos de los estilos más duros de la electrónica

Benjacid: ¡Hola! En primer lugar, gracias por la invitación; es un honor para mí poder responder a vuestras preguntas. Todo me está yendo bien.

Benjacid: Hi! First of all, thank you for the invitation; it is an honor for me to be able to answer your questions. Everything is going well for me.

LC: Tanto tu nombre artístico como tu usuario de Instagram indican tu amor por el techno y los sonidos ácidos con secuenciadores 303. Cuéntanos, ¿de dónde viene tu pasión por la música electrónica? ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas produciendo? ¿Has recibido algún tipo de formación?

B: Hace unos años no estaba en este ambiente. Un día, un amigo me llevó a una fiesta de techno (cuando tenía 17 años), la cual fue un verdadero éxito para mí, y es a partir de ese día cuando empecé a producir techno. Antes de eso ya producía bases de rap, ya que un colega me introdujo en los fundamentos de FL Studio.

LC: Both your stage name and your Instagram user indicate your love for techno and acid sounds with 303 sequencers. Tell us, where does your passion for electronic music come from? How long have you been producing? Have you received any training?

B: I was not in this environment a few years ago. One day, a friend took me to a techno party (when I was 17), which was a real hit for me, and it’s from that day when I started producing techno. I was already producing rap instrumentals before that, because a friend introduced me to the FL Studio basics.

LC: Eres francés. ¿Estás contento con la industria de música electrónica que hay en tu país? ¿Puedes recomendarnos algún club?

B: Yo vivo en el norte de Francia, en Lille. Nunca ha habido mucho movimiento en esta ciudad, y menos aún desde el COVID. Algunos colectivos luchan por poder ofrecernos buenas fiestas; estoy pensando en particular en New Rave, que acaba de celebrar su primera fiesta el 17/12/22 y fue un éxito. Creo que es la mejor fiesta que he vivido en todos los países juntos. Hay muchos clubes en París, pero no he ido lo suficiente como para deciros cuáles son buenos. Tenemos la suerte de estar cerca de Bélgica y Holanda para los fans del hardcore. Allí se celebran las mejores fiestas de este estilo

LC: You are french. Are you happy with the electronic music industry in your country? Can you recommend any club?

B: I live in the north of France, in Lille. Not much have been happening in this city, and even less since the COVID period. Some collectives are struggling to be able to offer us good parties; I am thinking in particular of New Rave, who have just had their first party on 17/12/22 and it was a success. I think it’s the best party I’ve ever experienced, all countries combined. There are many clubs in Paris, but I haven’t gone enough to tell you which ones are good. We are lucky to be close to Belgium and the Netherlands for hardcore fans. The best parties of this style take place there.

LC: ¿Cómo definirías la estética de Benjacid?

B: No me encasillo en un solo estilo, pero tiendo a decantarme por la vieja escuela, ya sea a nivel de pista o visual.

LC: How would you define Benjacid’s aesthetics?

B: I don’t get lost in a single style, but I tend to opt for the oldschool, whether it’s track level or visuals.

LC: ¿Cuál es tu opinión acerca de la estética/temática rave?

B: Me encanta el mundo de la rave y su cultura; no tengo una opinión definida al respecto. Aprecio que la libertad de ser quienes somos esté omnipresente en las raves y que cada uno pueda aportar su propio estilo. Hay pocas culturas tan liberadas y benévolas.

LC: What is your opinion about rave aesthetics/thematics?

B: I love the world of rave and its culture; I don’t have a definite opinion on this. I appreciate that the freedom to be who we are is omnipresent in raves and that everyone can bring their own style. There is few cultures so liberated and benevolent.

LC: A pesar de que tan solo tienes 21 años, te estás abriendo un hueco importante en el panorama europeo. ¿Te esperabas esta repercusión cuando empezaste con tu proyecto artístico?

B: Esperaba cualquier cosa menos esto; pensaba quedarme en mi habitación haciendo música para mí y pincharla. Todo sucedió de repente y no lo vi venir; estoy muy contento con esta situación.

LC: Even though you are only 21 years old, you are opening an important gap in the European scene. Did you expect this repercussion when you started your artistic project?

B: I expected anything but that; I thought I would stay in my room making music for myself and put it on. It all happened suddenly and I didn’t see it coming; I am very happy with this situation.

LC: ¿Puedes darnos alguna pista sobre los lanzamientos que tienes pensados para 2023?

B: Tengo programados algunos lanzamientos en sellos discográficos. Estoy pensando en particular en un tema que saldrá en el sello de Dr. Drakken (Safe Clouds), que se llamará `Techno Love Story´. También tengo previsto hacer un tema con Dxpe. Ya lo hemos hablado y debería hacerse, pero por el momento no tengo tiempo suficiente para ponerme concretamente a ello, y creo que él tampoco…

LC: Can you give us any clue about the releases you have in mind for 2023?

B: I have a few label releases scheduled. I’m thinking in particular of a track that will be released on Dr Drakken’s label (Safe Clouds), which will be called `Techno Love Story´. I also plan to make a track with Dxpe. We have already discussed it and it should be done, but for the moment I don’t have enough time to put myself into it concretely ,and I think he neither...

LC: Además de techno, también pinchas jumpstyle y millenium hardcore (podemos escuchar varias sesiones en tu SoundCloud). ¿Quiénes son tus artistas favoritos de hard?

B: De hecho, aunque produzco mucho techno, probablemente sea el estilo que menos escucho. Géneros como el jumpstyle y el hardcore son los que aprecio especialmente, y por eso los podéis encontrar en todos mis sets. Si tuviera que elegir a un artista en particular, sería sin duda la leyenda Marc Acardipane, quien acaba de publicar un álbum hace unas semanas.

LC: Besides techno, you also play jumpstyle and millenium hardcore (we can listen to several sessions on your SoundCloud). Who are your favorite hard music artists?

B: Indeed, even though I produce a lot of techno, it’s probably the style I listen to the least. Genres like jumpstyle and hardcore are the ones I particularly appreciate, and that’s why you can find them in all my sets. If I had to choose one artist in particular, it would definitely be the legend Marc Acardipane, who just released an album a few weeks ago.

LC: ¿Te consideras autoexigente en tu trabajo?

B: Sí, por supuesto. En cuanto a la producción, intento aprender cosas nuevas todos los días. Veo veinte tutoriales al día, y además estudio producción de audio, lo cual me ayuda mucho. Tengo un montón de temas que nunca he publicado porque no los encuentro lo suficientemente buenos. Cuento con 471 pistas en privado en mi SoundCloud…
Y a nivel de DJ, aún más. Paso mucho tiempo pinchando y entrenando en casa; no creo que tenga un nivel profesional, pero espero alcanzarlo algún día. Soy tan cuidadoso con mi directo que paso un estrés enorme en cada actuación.

LC: Do you consider yourself self-demanding in your work?

B: Yes, of course. In terms of production I try to learn new things every day. I have to watch about twenty tutorials a day, and besides that I study audio production, which helps me a lot. I have a lot of tracks that I have never released because I can’t find them good enough. I count 471 tracks in private on my SoundCloud…
And DJing level, even more. I spend a lot of time digging and training at home; I don’t think I have a professional level ,but I hope to reach it one day. I’m so careful about my performance that it gives me enormous stress for each one.

LC: ¿Cómo es Benjacid en cabina? ¿Cómo sueles estructurar las sesiones?

B: No esperéis escuchar un sólo un estilo, porque mezclo todos los géneros que me gustan en cada momento; y no esperéis que sea tranquilo, porque pincho mucho early hardcore. Pero estos diferentes estilos son, obviamente, siempre bien llevados.
Realmente no tengo estructuras particulares. Una semana antes de cada evento pongo en mi sesión los últimos temazos que encontré clasificándolos por orden de potencia. De esta manera, todo se pincha por sentimiento.

LC: How is Benjacid DJing? How do you usually structure your sessions?

B: Don’t expect to listen to just one style, because I mix all the genres I like at the moment; and don’t expect it to be quiet, because I play a lot of early hardcore. But these different styles are, obviously, always well brought.
I don’t really have any particular structures. A week before each event I put on my key the last nuggets I found by classifying them in order of power. Then everything is played by feeling.

LC: El 12 de noviembre de 2022 pinchaste en ENIGMA, una fiesta que se celebró en la sala ON de Madrid. ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia en esta discoteca?

B: Increíble, no me esperaba en absoluto una acogida así, tanto por parte de los organizadores como del público. Los organizadores fueron muy atentos, y doy las gracias a Esteban, quien estuvo muy bien de principio a fin. El ambiente fue bestial; el público bailó hasta el último minuto. El club también estuvo muy bien, así que les doy las gracias por todo el cariño que me han dado. Fue una de las mejores fiestas de mi vida como DJ.

LC: On November 12-22 you played at Enigma, a party held at the ON club in Madrid. How was your experience at this club?

B: Incredible, I did not expect such a welcome at all, both from the organizers and the public. The organizers were very caring, and I also thank Esteban, who was really top from start to finish. The atmosphere was there, the public danced until the last minute. The club was also really great, so I thank them for all the love they gave me. It was for one of the best parties of my life as a DJ.

LC: ¿Cuáles son tus metas a largo plazo?

B: Como cualquier productor y DJ, creo que mi sueño sería vivir de mi pasión, tener la oportunidad de pinchar todos los fines de semana y nunca dejar de hacer bailar a la gente. Sé que estilos como el early hardcore o el jumpstyle no son muy populares, y quizá estén mal vistos en algunas ciudades o países. Por eso me gustaría recuperar esta cultura allá donde vaya.

LC: What are your long-term goals?

B: Like any producer and DJ, I think my dream would be to live from my passion, to have the opportunity to play every weekend and never stop making people dance. I know that styles like early hardcore or jumpstyle are not very popular ,and maybe frowned upon in some cities or countries. I would therefore like to bring this culture back wherever I go

LC: ¿Con qué DAW produces?

B: FL Studio y Ableton. Uso ambos.

LC: What DAW do you produce with?

B: FLStudio and Ableton. I use both.

LC: Hobbies aparte de la música.

B: Realmente no tengo ninguno. Sólo escucho música, produzco y pincho cuando tengo tiempo libre.

LC: Hobbies apart from music.

B: I don’t really have any. In fact I only listen, produce or mix when I have free time.

LC: ¿Pinchar o producir?

B: Todo depende del momento. De momento prefiero pinchar, pero es sólo temporal, ya que en general prefiero producir

LC: DJing or producing?

B: Everything depends on the periods. At the moment I prefer to mix, but it is only temporary, because in general I prefer to produce.
