Hoy tenemos el placer de tener en la cueva a Fred V, artista con más de 10 años en la escena, anteriormente conocido por su dúo Fred V & Grafix y con muchos éxitos a sus espaldas.
Cuando el conocido dúo de drum & bass Fred V & Grafix anunció su separación a finales de 2018, todos los fans del mismo lo tomaron como una triste noticia. Un año y medio después, ambos han demostrado que sus producciones por separado son impecables y que tienen mucho más que mostrar. Es por ello que hoy tenemos en la cueva a Fred V, que nos hablará de esta separación, de su carrera en solitario, su nuevo EP y mucho más.
Loud Cave: Después de 10 años de éxito, te aventuras en un proyecto en solitario y nos sorprendes a todos con diferentes estilos y música de primera clase. ¿Cuál es el “secreto” para seguir reinventándote después de tantos años?
Fred V: ¡Gracias! Me he inspirado mucho de otros géneros realmente. Pienso que tengo una paleta principal de sonidos que me gusta usar en diferentes canciones que pueden funcionar en muchos contextos distintos. A veces me preocupo por que la cantidad de estilos diferentes que lanzo dentro del drum’n’bass pueda ser un poco demasiado variados, ¡pero hasta ahora estoy realmente satisfecho con como mi música en solitario ha sido recibida!
Loud Cave: After 10 years of success, you venture on a solo project and you surprise all with different styles and first class music. What’s the “secret” to keep reinventing yourself after so many years?
Fred V: Thank you! I just take a lot of inspiration from a lot of other genres really. I think I have a main pallet of sounds that I like using in different tracks that can work in a lot of different contexts. I do sometimes worry that the amount of different styles I release within drum’n’bass might be a bit too varied but so far I’m really pleased with how my solo music has been received!
LC: Cuando tú y tu dúo Grafix os separasteis, ambos dijisteis que después de 10 años empezasteis a tener diferentes visiones de la música, por lo que queríais tener una carrera en solitario. ¿Cómo diferenciarías el estilo entre Fred V & Grafix y su estilo en solitario? ¿Sigues algún proceso diferente a la hora de producir?
FV: Creo que lo principal con lo que he estado experimentando recientemente es en usar muchas progresiones de acordes inusuales, particularmente en mi nuevo EP. Esto es bastante diferente de la música de Fred V & Grafix que siempre ha sido muy diatónica (permanecer estrictamente dentro de una clave/escala). Los procesos que sigo son bastante similares, la diferencia más obvia es que no tengo a Grafix aquí para terminar y mezclar todo o para lanzar ideas al aire. Me he divertido mucho aprendiendo cómo rellenar ese vacío y he desarrollado muchas formas diferentes de terminar las cosas.
LC: When you and your duo Grafix split, you booth say that after 10 years you started to have different visions on music, so that’s why you wanted to have a solo career. How would you differentiate the style between Fred V & Grafix and your solo style? Do you follow any different process by the time to produce?
FV: I think the main thing I’ve been experimenting with recently is using a lot of unusual chord progressions, particularly in my new EP. This is quite different from Fred V & Grafix music which was always very diatonic (staying strictly within one key/scale). The processes I follow are pretty similar, the obvious difference being that I don’t have Grafix there to finish and mix everything or to bounce ideas off. I’ve had a lot of fun learning how to fill in that gap and have developed a lot of different ways to finish things.
LC: Teníais una gran base de fans como dúo así que, ¿cómo han respondido los fans a vuestra separación? ¿Sientes el mismo apoyo que antes?
FV: He estado realmente sastisfecho con la respuesta, ¡especialmente a mi nuevo EP! Es increíble que los dos hayamos podido desarrollar exitosas carreras en solitario sin ser gran cosa en términos de popularidad.
LC: You had a really big fan base as a duo so, how the fans responded to your split? Do you feel the same support than before?
FV: I’ve been really pleased with the response, especially to my new EP! It’s awesome that both of us have been able to develop successful solo careers without too much of a dip in terms of popularity.
LC: Has lanzado dos EPs como Fred V, “Proximity” y “Distance”. El primero muy melódico, incluso con un tema de future bass, el segundo con un sonido más agresivo sin descuidar lo melódico… ¿Cúal es el concepto entre estos EPs? ¿Qué dirías que te falta por experimentar en tu música?
FV: “Proximity” fue mi principal lanzamiento en solitario del año pasado y fue terminado durante un tiempo en el que me sentía en una fase de gran aprendizaje. Estilísticamente es un poco una continuación del sonido de Fred V & Grafix. “Distance” es mucho más oscuro y espero que muestre el progreso en mi habilidad como productor. Definitivamente siento como que a “Proximity” le faltaba un poco en el nivel de la producción en general, hay muchas cosas en él que habría hecho diferente ahora si tuviera la posibilidad.
LC: You’ve released two EPs like Fred V, “Proximity” and “Distance”. The first very melodic, even with a future bass track, the second with a more agressive sound without neglecting the melodic… What’s the concept between this EPs? What would you say you have left to experiment with in your music?
FV: Proximity was my main solo release of last year and was finished during a time when I feel like I was in a big learning phase. Stylistically it’s a bit of a continuation of the Fred V & Grafix sound. Distance is a lot darker and hopefully shows progress in my skill as a producer – I definitely feel like Proximity was lacking a bit in the overall production level, there are a lot of things in it that I’d do differently now if I had the chance.
LC: Probablemente el tema de tu nuevo EP que más ha sorprendido es “Wobbleboard”, porque es muy diferente a lo que sueles hacer. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de creación de este tema?
FV: Paso mucho tiempo experimentando con basslines y se me ocurrió el sonido principal a base de horas de intentar cosas distintas. Es probablemente el único tema que haya hecho nunca donde he estado conscientemente intentando conseguir una buena reacción en la pista de baile. Normalmente cuando hago música estoy más concentrado en intentar crear una respuesta más emocional.
LC: Probably the track of your new EP that has surprised the most is “Wobbleboard”, because it is very different from what you usually do. How was the creation process of this track?
FV: I spend a lot of time messing about with basslines and I came up with the main sound just from hours of trying different things. It’s probably the only tune I’ve ever made where I’ve been really consciously aiming to get a good reaction on the dancefloor – usually when I make music I’m more focused on trying to create a more emotional response.
LC: Hablando de nuevos estilos y habiendo mencionado tu tema de future bass “Proximity”, ¿te veremos en algunos otros estilos aparte del drum & bass?
FV: Definitivamente algo más de halftime pero probablemente con menos sonido “future bass” y con una influencia más hip-hop/Ivy Lab. Lo future bass como “Proximity”/”Burning Me” es algo que realmente disfruto haciendo pero no es una dirección que sienta necesario explorar más allá (¡al menos por ahora!)
LC: Talking about new styles and having mentioned your future bass track “Proximity”, will we see you on any other styles apart from drum & bass?
FV: Definitely some more halftime stuff but probably with less of a ‘futurebass’ sound and with more of a hip-hop/Ivy Lab influence. The futurebassy stuff like Proximity/Burning Me is something I really enjoy making but isn’t really a direction I feel compelled to explore much further (for now at least!)
LC: Después de estos dos EPs, ¿qué planes de futuro tienes? ¿Quizá un álbum?
FV: Estoy trabajando en un álbum. ¡Probablemente sea un poco temprano para decir algo más en este punto!
LC: After this two EPs, what plans of future do you have? Maybe an album?
FV: I’m working towards an album – it’s probably a bit early to say anything else at this stage!
LC: ¿Crees que sería posible e interesante hacer una colaboración con Grafix pero mezclando vuestros estilos en solitario? ¿O no tienes eso en mente?
FV: Sí me encantaría hacer eso en algún momento. Creo que sería realmente interesante combinar mis progresiones de acordes más emocionales (como en “Away”/”Shadow”) con su producción fuerte y más influenciada por el techno (como en “Stutter”/”Frozen”)
LC: Do you think that it would be possible and interesting to do a collaboration with Grafix but mixing your solo styles? Or you don’t have that on mind?
FV: Yeah I would love to do this at some point. I think it would be really interesting to combine my moodier chord progressions (like in Away/Shadow) with his heavier, more techno influenced production (Stutter/Frozen).
LC: Te hemos visto haciendo grandes remixes a “Not Giving In” de Tom Walker y “Write It Down” de Hamzaa, ambos artistas alejados de la música electrónica. ¿Planeas hacer más de esto? ¿Qué criterio sigues a la hora de elegir las canciones que remezclas?
FV: He tenido mucha suerte con los remixes ya que esos dos temas son asombrosos originalmente, lo que hace mucho más fácil y divertido remezclarlos. Con ambos he intentado mostrar el máximo respeto que he podido a las versiones originales, ¡estoy realmente satisfecho con cómo quedaron ambos! Estoy concentrándome más en mi propia producción por el momento, ¡pero no puedo esperar a hacer más remixes en un futuro!
LC: We’ve seen you doing great remixes to “Not Giving In” from Tom Walker and “Write It Down” from Hamzaa, both artists out from electronic music. Are you planning to do more of this? What criteria do you follow to choose the tracks that you remix?
FV: I’ve been very lucky with remixes since both of those tunes are amazing songs originally which makes remixing them a lot easier and more fun. With both of them I tried to show as much respect to the original versions as I could, I’m really pleased with how both of them turned out! I’m focussing more on my own production at the moment but can’t wait to do more remixes in the future!
LC: Esta es una pregunta obligatoria debido a los momentos que estamos viviendo… ¿Cómo piensas que esta pandemia del Covid-19 va a afectar a la industria de la electrónica, y más concretamente a los DJs?
FV: Es difícil ignorar los efectos negativos de ello en este momento por supuesto. Creo que la cosa positiva es que la mayoría de artistas pasarán incluso más tiempo en el estudio, ¡así que imagino que 2021 será un año bastante especial musicalmente!
LC: This an obligatory question due to the moments we’re living… How do you think this Covid-19 pandemic is going to affect the electronic music industry, and more concretely the DJs?
FV: It’s hard to ignore the negative effects of it at the moment of course. I think the positive thing is that most artists will be spending even more time in the studio so I imagine 2021 will be a pretty special year musically!
