Hoy entrevistamos a Eugen Boorsma, un músico con mayúsculas que distingue sus producciones a base de plasmar en ellas originalidad y un sinfín de emociones

MYST: Gracias por recibirme, chicos. ¡Claro! Siempre es genial lanzar nueva música. Esta vez será un poco diferente ya que no hay presión por hacer shows, pero eso me viene muy bien en este momento.
Loud Cave: Hi Eugen, welcome to the cave! It’s a real pleasure for us to have one of the best hard music producers ever. Tell us, do you feel motivated after your return to the scene?
MYST: Thanks for having me, man. Sure it is always great to release new music. This time will be a bit different since there’s no pressure from doing shows. But that actually suits me greatly at this point of time.
LC: Hace unos meses, la industria de los harder styles sufrió una de las peores noticias de su historia, la despedida de MYST. Por suerte, el pasado 28 de octubre regresaste con “I Miss Those Days”, un track mágico de hardstyle que lleva asociado tu sonido característico. ¿Qué ha hecho que vuelvas a producir? ¿Tienes pensado también volver a los shows?
M: En primer lugar, gracias por el cumplido. Hace ya un año que anuncié mi despedida, y cuando te tomas un tiempo libre como este, obtienes nuevas perspectivas sobre la vida y sobre las opciones de vida. Ahora, después de estar fuera durante este periodo, sé lo que quiero y lo que no quiero en mi trayectoria artística. No pienso volver a hacer shows, ya que me aleja de mi familia y ya he visto suficiente. En el pasado me gustaba hacer espectáculos, pero la situación de la pandemia cambió definitivamente todo para mí. Ahora tengo una familia, y me ha hecho darme cuenta de que tienes menos influencia en tu carrera de lo que crees cuando empiezas. Hay que hacer ciertos sacrificios para llegar a ser realmente ”exitoso”, lo que yo no considero un éxito en absoluto.
LC: A few months ago, the hardstyle industry suffered one of the worst news in its history, the farewell of MYST. Luckily, last October 28th you came back with “I Miss Those Days”, a magical hardstyle track with your signature sound associated to it. What has made you come back to producing? Do you plan to come back to the shows as well?
M: First of all, thanks for the compliment. I announced my farewell a year ago now. And when you take some time off like that, you get new perspectives on life and life choices. I know now after being away for this period what I want, and do not want in my artistic journey. I’m not planning to do shows again. Since it keeps me away from my family and I’ve seen enough of it. I did like to do shows in the past. But the whole pandemic situation definitely changed everything for me. I have a family now, plus it made me realise you have less influence on your career than you think when you start out. Certain sacrifices need to be made to really become ‘’successful’’, which I do not consider success at all.
LC: Tu último track antes de tu retirada temporal, “That´s Life” junto a Disarray, se utilizó para hacer una competición oficial de remixes. ¿Cuántos remixes te enviaron? ¿Qué nos puedes contar acerca de la remezcla de Skully, el ganador del concurso?
M: Probablemente unos 100, o más. Fue realmente notable. No me lo esperaba, así que tuve que tomarme un día entero para escuchar todo. El ganador, Skully, tenía una remezcla tan buena que tuve que darle el trofeo.
LC: Your last track before your temporary retirement, “That’s Life” with Disarray, was used for an official remix competition. How many remixes were sent to you? What can you tell us about the remix of Skully, the winner of the competition?
M: Probably about 100+. It was truly remarkable. I never expected it. So I had to take a full day to check them all out. But the winner, Skully, had such a great remix, that I had to give him the trofee.
LC: ¿De dónde viene MYST, tu nombre artístico?
M: Soy de Frisia, una provincia (del antiguo país) de los Países Bajos. Estaba buscando algunas palabras frisonas antiguas hasta que aterricé en ”Myst”, que significa “tipo sofisticado”. Entonces utilicé los signos rúnicos para escribirla (que también se utilizaban en Frisia hace mucho tiempo). Acabé utilizando sólo la runa M; esa es la razón por la que uso letras mayúsculas.
LC: Where does MYST, your stage name, come from?
M: I’m from Friesland which is a province (former country) in The Netherlands. And I was searching for some old Frisian words. Then I landed on ‘’Myst’’ which means sophisticated, somewhat mean guy. Then I used rune signs to write it (which were used in Friesland waaay back as well). I ended up using the M rune only. But that is the reason why I use capital letters.
LC: Para la gente que no lo sepa, antes de ser MYST te mostrabas al público bajo el alias de Pandorum, siendo un DJ de hardcore (véanse “I Won´t Apologise” y “No Surviving”, temas lanzados en Enzyme Records). ¿Por qué decidiste abandonar el hardcore y dedicarte al hardstyle?
M: Ya no me gustaba lo duro y tenía mayores ambiciones. Quería llegar a más gente con mi música, y en ese momento sentía que mi estilo, el hardcore de BPM más lento, era un género muerto.
LC: For those who don’t know, before becoming MYST you were a hardcore DJ under the alias Pandorum (see “I Won’t Apologise” and “No Surviving”, released on Enzyme Records). Why did you decide to leave hardcore and dedicate yourself to hardstyle?
M: I did not like hardcore anymore. And I just had bigger ambitions. I wanted to reach more people with my music and at the time felt my style, the slower bpm hardcore was just a dead genre.
LC: ¿Te han ayudado tus conocimientos musicales sobre guitarra a la hora de crear canciones de hardstyle? ¿Recomendarías aprender a tocar algún instrumento a los jóvenes productores que están empezando?
M: Sí y no. Utilizo el mismo tipo de comportamiento en mis riffs de guitarra que en mis melodías de hardstyle, seguro, pero nunca pienso en una guitarra cuando hago música. Todo se hace en un estado subconsciente. Sin embargo; yo diría que sólo debes aprender cosas que te interesen, y si realmente te interesa la guitarra, probablemente ya estés aprendiendo sobre ella. Diría que deberías exponerte a tantos géneros como sea posible y elegir lo que te gusta a partir de ahí.
LC: Has your knowledge of guitar music helped you in the creation of hardstyle songs? Would you recommend learning to play an instrument to young producers who are just starting out?
M: Yes and no. I use the same kind of behaviour that I used in my guitar riffs, like in my hardstyle melodies, for sure. But I never think about a guitar when I make music. It’s all made in a subconscious state. I would say though, you should only learn things that interest you. And if you really are interested in guitars, you probably are already learning about it. I would say that you should expose yourself to as many genres as possible and pick what you like from thereon.
LC: Una de las muchas cosas que te engrandecen es el hecho de que pones en venta mucho material de producción, desde packs de sonidos (kicks, leads…) hasta los propios archivos FLP. de tus proyectos. Esto es de gran ayuda para la gente que quiere ver cómo es tu música desde dentro. ¿Cómo te sientes al ver que pequeños productores están firmando con sellos importantes después de aprender con tu material?
M: Sí, eso es realmente sorprendente. Para mí, la vida consiste en aprender habilidades, compartir conocimientos y ser competitivo. Creo que es una pérdida de tiempo que la gente pase por la misma rutina que yo para alcanzar sus objetivos. Por supuesto que se aprende mucho cuando se trabaja durante 15 años, pero creo que hay que alcanzar nuevas cotas en todo. Como cualquier otra técnica, debe evolucionar. Lo único que me importa es ver a la gente fichar por sellos y compartir su éxito conmigo.
LC: One of the many things that makes you great is the fact that you put a lot of production material for sale, from sound packs (kicks, leads…) to the FLP. files of your own projects. This is a great help for people who want to see what your music is like from the inside. How do you feel when you see that small producers are signing with major labels after learning from your material?
M: Yes, that is truly amazing. For me, life is all about learning skills, sharing knowledge, and being competitive. I think it’s such a waste of time for people to go through the same grind as I have to reach their goals. Of course you learn alot when you grind for 15 years. But I think new heights need to be reached in everything. Just like every other technique, it should evolve.
Seeing people get signed, sharing their success with me is all I care about.
LC: Tu estilo de producir hardstyle es completamente inconfundible dentro de la escena. Le das una vital importancia a las ambientaciones, así como a las melodías y los leads que la componen. ¿Te costó mucho diferenciar tu sonido?
M: Gracias. Pienso lo menos posible. Porque sobrepensar es un mecanismo de supervivencia. No quiero pensar en ese estado cuando hago música porque sonará forzada. Pienso en abundancia, también conocido como estado de flujo. Lo aprendí haciendo música durante muchos años y puedo entrar y salir de él cuando quiera, así que la diferenciación, por ejemplo, es algo que puedes hacer muy fácilmente cuando estás en un estado de flujo. No es algo difícil para mí.
LC: Your style of producing hardstyle is completely unmistakable in the scene. You attach great importance to the ambient, as well as to the melodies and leads that make it up. Did you find it difficult to differentiate your sound?
M: Thanks. I think as little as possible. Because (over)thinking is a survival mechanism. I don’t want to think in that state when I make music because my music will sound forceful. So I think in abundance, also known as the flow state. I learned this by making music for so many years and I can just hop in and out of it any time I want. So differentiation for example is something you can do very easily when you are in a flow state.
So no it’s not difficult for me, because it’s not about thinking about it.
LC: En tus canciones se observa que te gusta jugar con las vocales. ¿Qué importancia crees que tienen en los harder styles?
M: Son una gran herramienta para diferenciar. Si utilizas sonidos digitales en tu pista y haces la variación con algo orgánico, siempre se completará el espectro. Hay que mirarlo como un espectro de colores.
LC: In your songs it can be seen that you like to play with vocals. How important do you think they are in the harder styles?
M: It’s a great tool to differentiate with. If you use digital sounds in your track, and you make the variation with something organic, it will always complete the spectrum. See it as a color spectrum.
LC: A pesar de que tienes lanzamientos en sellos como Unleashed Records o Roughstate, la mayoría de tus pistas han visto la luz por Nightbreed (el label de Endymion, con quienes has colaborado en “Death Never Dies”, “See You Again” o “Waiting For Treason”). ¿Crees que tenéis una buena complicidad en el estudio?
M: Nightbreed era mi sello principal como MYST antes de dejarlo. Bart, de Endymion, y yo, ya teníamos contacto desde hace años en mis días de Pandorum, y me ayudó a entrar en Enzyme Records también. Me preguntó si estaba interesado en hacer hardstyle cuando dejé Pandorum, y quise intentarlo como MYST. El resto es historia. ¡Siempre he tenido una gran colaboración con ellos!
LC: Although you have releases on labels like Unleashed Records or Roughstate, most of your tracks have been released on Nightbreed (Endymion’s label, with whom you have collaborated on “Death Never Dies”, “See You Again” or “Waiting For Treason”). Do you think you have a good rapport in the studio?
M: Nightbreed was my main label as MYST before I quit. Bart of Endymion and I already had contact for years in my Pandorum days and he helped me get on Enzyme records as well. He asked me if I was interested in making hardstyle when I quit Pandorum, And I wanted to give it a try as MYST. The rest is history! I’ve always had a great collaboration with the guys!
LC: En 2021 lanzaste “Trinity” (la última parte de la trilogía), el mejor LP de hardstyle del año y uno de los mejores de toda la historia. ¿Qué simboliza para ti este álbum?
M: “Trinity” trata sobre el ciclo de la vida. En ese momento tuve mi primer hijo, y cuando tienes hijos te conviertes en una persona diferente. Vivo al servicio de mis hijos, y ya no para mí. Es una oda a la vida, por eso empecé el álbum con “Life Eternal”.
LC: In 2021 you released “Trinity” (the last part of the trilogy), the best hardstyle LP of the year and one of the bests ever. What does this album symbolise for you?
M: Trinity is about the cycle of life. At the time I had my first kid. And when you have children you just become a different person. I’m living in service for my kids and not for myself anymore. It’s an ode to life! That’s why I started the album out with Life Eternal.
LC: Tenemos entendido que vas a colaborar con el Alter Ego de Frontliner. ¿Puedes darnos alguna pista sobre lo que tienes preparado para los próximos meses? ¿Podremos escuchar un nuevo álbum de MYST?
M: ¡La collab con Frontliner saldrá en breve! Él comunicará cuándo. Mi próximo lanzamiento está planeado para salir en diciembre así que, ¡estad atentos! Definitivamente sacaré música en solitario, ya que producir bajo MYST ya no es una actividad a tiempo completo pero, quién sabe lo que nos deparará el futuro.
LC: We know that you are going to collaborate with Frontliner’s Alter Ego, can you give us some hints about what you have in store for the next months? Will we be able to hear a new MYST album?
M: The Frontliner collab will come out shortly! He will communicate what and when is next.
My next release is planned to come out in December so keep an eye on that! I will definitely do solo releases only since producing under MYST is not a full time activity anymore. Who knows what the future will hold though.
LC: Según está evolucionando la escena, ¿consideras que se acabará abandonando la vertiente melódica en las canciones de hard?
M: No tengo ni idea. Debo decir que ya no escucho nada de hardstyle o hardcore; no me gusta el 98% del género. Sólo me gustan los temas con cierta profundidad melódica y emocional (original), que son bastante escasos, diría yo. Pero eso es exactamente lo que sigo intentando ofrecer con mi música.
LC: As the scene is evolving, do you think the melodic side of hard music songs will be abandoned?
M: I have no idea! I’m not listening to any hardstyle or hardcore anymore I must say. I don’t like 98% of the genre. I only like tracks with some (original) melodic and emotional depth which are pretty damn scarce is what I would say. But that’s exactly what I’m still trying to offer with my music.
LC: ¿Crees que has estado infravalorado dentro de la escena si tenemos en cuenta tu calidad, talento y conocimientos para hacer música?
M: No soy yo quien decide cuál es mi valor; la gente lo quiere o no lo quiere. Personalmente, creo que tengo unos dones y unas cualidades únicas que no encajan en este género ni en esta trayectoria vital, y esa es parte de la razón por la que ya no me dedico a MYST a tiempo completo. Hay más cosas en la vida que el hardstyle, ¡para mí seguro!
LC: Do you think you have been undervalued in the scene considering your quality, talent and knowledge of music making?
M: It’s not for me to decide what my value is. The people want it or don’t want it. I personally think I have some unique gifts and qualities that do not fit this genre or life path. And that’s part of the reason why I’m not doing MYST full time anymore. There’s more to life than hardstyle, for me for sure!

LC: ¿Tienes algún recuerdo muy especial para ti en algún show en concreto?
M: Creo que Freaqshow 2017, Ziggodome. Fue súper intenso.
LC: Do you have a very special memory for you from a particular show?
M: I think Freaqshow 2017, Ziggodome. That was super intense.
LC: A día de hoy, ¿disfrutas de los géneros con BPMs más altos?
M: No. Apenas escucho música dance haha.
LC: Do you currently enjoy the genres with the highest BPMs?
M: No. I barely listen to dance music haha.
LC: ¿Quiénes crees que son las jóvenes promesas de la escena?
M: Me gusta Nightcraft; hizo un gran edit de “Life Eternal”. Aparte de eso, no tengo ni idea.
LC: Who do you think are the young promises of the scene?
M: I like Nightcraft; he made a great edit of “Life Eternal”. Aside from that, I have no idea.
LC: Algún hobbie aparte de la música.
M: La verdad es que no, sólo negocios, y tal vez entrenamiento con pesas. Los niños también te mantienen ocupado.
LC: Any hobbies apart from music?
M: Not really! Just business. Weight training maybe. Kids keep you busy as well.
LC: Por último, ¿algo que quieras decirle a todos los fans que tienes en España?
M: Quiero daros las gracias a todos vosotros por el apoyo. Sé que tengo MUCHOS fans dedicados en España, lo cual es súper increíble para mí, y realmente lo aprecio. ¡Gracias!
