A pesar de que Orian lleva unos cuantos años en la industria del hard, sin duda este 2023 está siendo el mejor momento de su carrera artística. ¿Cuándo mejor que ahora para charlar con él?

Loud Cave: Hola Orian, ¡es un verdadero placer poder charlar contigo hoy! Antes de comenzar con las preguntas de la entrevista nos gustaría agradecerte tu presencia en la cueva; eres uno de los artistas de raw a los que más admiramos. Cuéntanos, ¿cómo estás?

So Juice: Gracias chicos, estoy muy bien.

Loud Cave: Hi Orian, it’s a real pleasure to be able to chat with you today! Before we start with the interview questions we would like to thank you for coming to the cave; you are one of the raw artists we admire the most. Tell us, how are you?

So Juice: Thank you guys, I’m doing great.

LC: Te presentas al público con un nombre artístico un tanto peculiar. ¿Por qué decidiste llamarte So Juice (“muy jugoso”, si lo traducimos al español)?

SJ: En realidad estaba buscando un nombre desde hace mucho tiempo. Llegué a tener mi primer tema listo, pero no tenía nombre artístico. Entonces, una vez, en una conversación tonta con DEEZL, él contesto “so juice” a uno de mis mensajes. Le dije que sería un nombre de artista divertido, y acabé usándolo.

LC: You introduce yourself to the public with a rather peculiar stage name. Why did you decide to call yourself So Juice?

SJ: I was looking for a name since a long time. I already had my first track ready and all, but no name. Then, one time, in a goofy chat with DEEZL, he answered “so juice” to one of my messages. I said that would make a fun artist name, and I ended up actually using it.

LC: Naciste en Francia, un país en el que los harder styles cada vez tienen más repercusión. ¿Cómo ves la escena del hard en tu nación? ¿Cómo surgió tu pasión por el género y a qué edad empezaste a producir? ¿Has recibido algún tipo de formación para hacer música?

SJ: En realidad, la escena de los harder styles está un poco moribunda en Francia, o al menos ya no es lo que era hace unos años. Empecé a escuchar esta música en el instituto, a través de amigos, y poco después comencé a producir yo mismo. Esto fue hace como 6 años, cuando tenía 17 o algo así. Realmente no recibí formación. Sin embargo; fui a una escuela de técnicos de sonido más orientada a la música en vivo.

LC: You were born in France, a country where harder styles have more and more impact. How do you see the harder styles scene in your country? How did your passion for the genre arise and at what age did you start producing? Have you received any kind of training to make music?

SJ: Actually, the harder styles scene is a bit dying in France, or at least it’s not what it used to be a few years ago. I started listening to this music in highschool, through friends, and not long after I started producing myself. It was like 6 years ago, so I was 17 or something. I didn’t receive any traininig. However; I went to a sound technician school at some point, more oriented towards live music.

LC: En tus inicios te dedicabas principalmente al uptempo hardcore bajo el nombre de Orian (véanse tracks como ‘Earthquake’ con Abaddon, ‘Last Breath’ con MBK & Nstinct, ‘Games Begin’ junto a Trespassed o el famoso ‘Self Destruction’ en colaboración con DRS, R3T3P y Rob Gee). Sin embargo; desde 2020 produces principalmente raw. ¿Por qué decidiste bajar los BPMs en tus canciones?

SJ: No es una cuestión de BPM. No me gustaba la escena del uptempo ni la dirección que estaba tomando. Siempre he querido hacer raw, pero nunca sentí que tuviera algo interesante que aportar hasta 2020. Estoy muy contento de haber hecho este cambio.

LC: In your beginnings you were mainly an uptempo hardcore artist under the name Orian (see tracks like ‘Earthquake’ with Abaddon, ‘Last Breath’ with MBK & Nstinct, ‘Games Begin’ with Trespassed or the famous ‘Self Destruction’ in collaboration with DRS, R3T3P and Rob Gee). However; since 2020 you produce mainly raw. Why did you decide to lower the BPMs in your songs?

SJ: It’s not a matter of BPM. I dind’t like the uptempo scene and the direction it was going. I’ve always wanted to do raw, but never felt I had something interesting to bring to the table until 2020. I’m really happy about this change.

LC: Aún así, en los últimos tiempos has lazado alguna canción de uptempo, como es el caso de ‘On A Mission’ con Andy The Core. Aunque ahora seas un artista de rawstyle, ¿tienes pensado seguir sorprendiendo con hardcore de vez en cuando?

SJ: Sí, de vez en cuando, por qué no. Tengo una nueva canción que probablemente saldrá este año…

LC: Still, in recent times you have released some uptempo tracks, such as ‘On A Mission’ with Andy The Core. Although you are now a rawstyle artist, do you plan to keep surprising with hardcore from time to time?

SJ: Yes, from time to time, why not. I have a new song that probably will come out this year actually…

LC: Últimamente, el raw y el uptempo están más unidos que nunca, tanto por las numerosas colaboraciones entre artistas de ambos géneros como por la moda de los zaag kicks. ¿Qué opinas acerca de que este tipo de bombo esté sonando tanto en la industria?

SJ: Personalmente no me gustan los zaag kicks , pero tener tendencias como esa es saludable y mantiene vivo el género.

LC: Lately, raw and uptempo are closer than ever, because of the numerous collaborations between artists from both genres and because of the zaag kicks. What do you think about this kind of kick is being so prevalent in the industry?

SJ: I don’t really like zaag kicks personally, but having trends like that is healthy and keeps the genre alive.

LC: Eres una pieza fundamental de Gearbox Digital (el mejor sello de raw del mundo) junto a otros grandes DJs como Fraw, Anderex, DEEZL, Krowdexx o Mutilator. ¿Qué simboliza este label para ti? ¿Cómo es tu relación con tus compañeros de sello?

SJ: Siempre ha sido mi sello de música hard favorito, y siempre lo será. No estaría haciendo rawstyle si no fuera por Gearbox; estoy muy agradecido de formar parte de él. Todo va muy bien, todos somos buenos amigos y nos divertimos mucho cuando nos vemos. Sinceramente, no podría soñar con un equipo mejor.

LC: You are a key part of Gearbox Digital (the best raw label in the world) along with other great DJs like Fraw, Anderex, DEEZL, Krowdexx or Mutilator. What does this label symbolise for you? How is your relationship with your label mates?

SJ: It has always been my favorite hard music label, and will always be. I wouldn’t be making rawstyle if it wasn’t for Gearbox; I’m really thankfull to be a part of it. It’s going really well, we are all good friends and have tones of fun when we see each other. I couldn’t dream of a better team honestly.

LC: En Gearbox lanzáis compilaciones muy interesantes como Lockdown, Twin Turbo o Full Throttle. Teniendo en cuenta que has participado en todas, cuéntanos, ¿qué te parece la idea de lanzar EPs/LPs conjuntos con tus compañeros? ¿Volveremos a oír una compilación de este tipo?

SJ: Estas recopilaciones son divertidas, pero no tienen un gran rendimiento, ya que muchos temas buenos pueden pasar desapercibidos. Por ahora intentamos alejarnos de ese modelo, pero quién sabe.

LC: In Gearbox you release very interesting compilations like Lockdown, Twin Turbo or Full Throttle. Taking into account that you have participated in all of them, tell us, what do you think about the idea of releasing joint EPs/LPs with your label mates? Will we ever hear a compilation of this kind again?

SJ: These compilations are fun, but they don’t perform great, as a lot of good tracks can go unnoticed. We’re trying to stay away from that model for now, but who knows.

LC: Has colaborado con el australiano DEEZL en varias ocasiones, como por ejemplo en ‘CYBER LOVE’. De hecho, hace poco formasteis el grupo CYBERGORE, presentando una canción que está teniendo una repercusión brutal. ¿Por qué decidisteis juntaros en forma de dúo? ¿Qué ideas tenéis para el futuro?

SJ: Siempre quisimos hacer algo juntos. Era un emparejamiento obvio, porque él es mi mejor amigo en Gearbox, y nos conocemos desde hace mucho tiempo. CYBERGORE trata de llevar ese ambiente oscuro y metálico a la escena. Por ahora vamos a perfeccionarlo, y espero que algún día podamos organizar un evento CYBERGORE.

LC: You have collaborated with Australian DEEZL on several occasions, for example on ‘CYBER LOVE’. In fact, you recently formed the band CYBERGORE, presenting a song that is having a brutal repercussion. Why did you decide to get together as a duo? What ideas do you have for the future?

SJ: We always wanted to do something together. I mean it was just such an obvious pairing, cause he’s my closest friend at Gearbox, and we know each other since a long time. CYBERGORE is all about bringing that dark and metal vibe to the scene. For now we’re gonna perfect it, and hopefully someday we can host a CYBERGORE event!

LC: Tu música se caracteriza por mezclar hard con otros estilos de electrónica, concretamente de bass music. Algunos ejemplos muy representativos son el dark trap de ‘666’ con Riot Shift, el hybrid trap en ‘Juice’ o ‘2 On The Way’, el complextro en ‘Take Control’ junto a Anderex, o el bass house en ‘Lose Control’, ‘Shut Down’ o ‘Nowadays Music’. ¿Tienes pensado seguir mezclando géneros de esta forma? ¿Crees que le aporta aire fresco a la escena? ¿Quiénes son tus artistas de bass music preferidos?

SJ: Sí, definitivamente voy a seguir mezclando estilos así. Es parte de mi identidad como artista y mantiene las cosas interesantes para mí como productor. Siempre quiero probar cosas nuevas, y me aburro muy rápido. Os habréis dado cuenta de que ya no lo hago tan a menudo como antes, pero es porque, de lo contrario, puede resultar un poco molesto si hay demasiada mezcla en un set. Pero sí, no creo que deje de hacerlo nunca. Y sí, creo que le aporta un aire fresco a la escena; no veo a mucha gente haciéndolo. Por nombrar algunos, mis favoritos serían: Deathpact, Effin, VRG, Tchami, Matroda, Loge21 …

LC: Your music is characterized by mixing hard with other styles of electronic, specifically bass music. Some representative examples are the dark trap of ‘666’ with Riot Shift, the hybrid trap in ‘Juice’ or ‘2 On The Way’, the complextro in ‘Take Control’ with Anderex, or the bass house in ‘Lose Control’, ‘Shut Down’ or ‘Nowadays Music’. Do you plan to continue mixing genres in this way? Do you think it brings fresh air to the scene? Who are your favourite bass music artists?

SJ: Yes, I’m definitely gonna keep bringing styles like that. It’s part of my identity as an artist, and it keeps things interesting for me as a producer. I always wanna try new stuff, and I get bored very fast. You might have noticed I don’t do it as often as I used to, but it’s just cause otherwise, it can get a bit annoying if you have too much of it in a set. But yeah, I don’t think i’ll ever stop. And yeah, I think it brings a fresh air to the scene; I don’t see many people doing that. To name a few of my favourites: Deathpact, Effin, VRG, Tchami, Matroda, Loge21 …

LC: Si seguimos hablando de referencias musicales, observamos pinceladas de rock metal/deathcore en canciones como ‘Full Throttle’ con Mutilator y Sovereign King, o en los screams de ‘Cant’t Break Us’ o ‘Don’t Turn Back’; así como en los diseños de tus tracks y en la tipografía de tu logo. ¿Disfrutas también de este tipo de música?

SJ: Sí, obviamente me encanta el metal. Siempre me ha gustado la iconografía y la estética de los géneros más duros, como podéis ver en mis logotipos, pero hoy en día sólo escucho metal “más suave” de los 80, como heavy, glam y hard rock.

LC: If we keep talking about musical references, we can see touches of metal/deathcore rock in songs like ‘Full Throttle’ with Mutilator and Sovereign King, or in the screams of ‘Cant’t Break Us’ or ‘Don’t Turn Back’; as well as in the designs of your tracks and in the typography of your logo. Do you also enjoy this kind of music?

SJ: Yeah, I obviously love metal. I’ve always loved the iconography and the aesthetic of the harder genres, as you can see in my logos, but nowadays I mostly only listen to “softer” metal from the 80s like heavy, glam and hard rock.

LC: ¿Escucharemos en algún momento un álbum de So Juice?

SJ: Sí, definitivamente me encantaría hacer un álbum en algún momento, pero creo que es demasiado pronto en mi carrera para eso. Sin embargo; habrá un álbum antes de lo que creéis…

LC: Will we ever hear a So Juice album?

SJ: Yes, I would definitely love to do an album at some point, but I think it’s too early in my career for that. However; there will be an album coming sooner than you think …

LC: ¿Cómo es So Juice en cabina? ¿Te gusta más pinchar solo o en B2B?

SJ: Antes prefería la experiencia en solitario, pero ahora prefiero mucho más el B2B, sobre todo con otros artistas de Gearbox; nos lo pasamos muy bien en el escenario. Además, como técnicamente pinchas menos canciones, puedes permitirte poner sólo temazos.

LC: How is So Juice in the booth? Do you like to play solo or B2B?

SJ: I used to prefer the solo experience, but now it’s B2Bs by a long mile, especially with fellow Gearbox artists; we just have so much fun on stage. Also, since you technically play less tracks, you can afford to play only bangers.

LC: El pasado 21 de abril pinchaste por primera vez en España, en la fiesta VOLT!, junto a Anderex y Abaddon. ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia actuando en nuestro país? ¿Quieres mandarles algún mensaje a tus fans españoles?

SJ: Nos lo pasamos muy bien y todo el mundo fue muy amable con nosotros, ¡estamos deseando volver! Para ser honestos, nos sorprendió lo bien que el público se sabía nuestros temas. El público español es realmente uno de los mejores del mundo. Fans españoles, ¡os queremos <3!

LC: Last April 21st you played for the first time in Spain, at the VOLT! party, together with Anderex and Abaddon. How was your experience performing in our country? Do you want to send a message to your Spanish fans?

SJ: We had tones of fun and everyone was so nice with us, we really can’t wait to be back! To be honest, we were surprised by how well the crowd knew our tracks. The Spanish crowd is really one of the bests in the world. Spanish fans, ¡we love you <3!

SJ: No lo sé, para ser sincero. ¿Supremacy ? ¿Defqon Blue?

LC: A long term goal.

SJ: I don’t know, to be honest. Supremacy ? Defqon Blue ?

LC: Algún hobbie aparte de la música.

SJ: Me encanta el dibujo y el diseño en general.

LC: A hobby apart from music.

SJ: I love drawing and design in general.

LC: Por último, ¿qué consejo le darías a un joven productor que quiere llegar lejos?

SJ: No pierdas demasiado tiempo intentando lanzar en solitario tus canciones, simplemente trabaja en silencio hasta que tengas la calidad que buscan los sellos. Además, no tienes que esforzarte mucho para ser original; te saldrá de forma natural. Si eres un principiante, invierte tu energía en aprender y dominar los conceptos básicos.

LC: Finally, what advice would you give to a young producer who wants to go far?

SJ: Don’t wast too much time trying to self release your tracks, just work in silence until you have the quality that labels are looking for. Also you don’t have to try hard to be original; it will come naturally. If you’re a newcomer, spend your energy into learning and mastering the basics instead.
